Fishing at 300Follow

After getting my druid to level 63 I decided to work on my fishing for a while. I was at level 265 so I took a short trip to Feralas to work on it. Each skill point took about 7 casts so getting to 300 was fairly quick. After getting my Master training, I continued fishing in Zangarmarsh and suddenly realized that it now takes 10-11 casts per point. That's quite a jump, or at least it feels that way when you are trying to level up. I guess I should think about getting an addon so at least I don't need to keep moving over to my bars to cast (I think there's one that lets you double-click to cast).

The addon I use is called Fishing Buddy. It has an option to let you double right click to cast, which makes it faster. It also tracks every single fish you catch and where it is caught as well, which can be handy when you want to come back later and fish for a specific fish.

Yeah, fishing in OL is a nightmare, especially if, like me, you were dumb enough to vendor that +25 pole because you assumed another one of your toons would handle fishing.

I managed to get the Big Iron pole a while back (by going to Desolace) so it helps. I'd like to get some better fishing gear but am never around for the STV Extravaganza.

I guess I need to start stocking up on some +100 lures as they are in limited supply.

Once you hit level 70 and start doing the daily fishing quests you can get + fishing gear that way. And you’ll never run out of +100 skill Sharpened Fish Hooks.

For now I’d suggest checking the auction house for the sharpened fish hooks. I have about eight extra stacks of them in my bank, plus one or two stacks on each of my four characters doing the fishing daily quests. On Blackhand I’ve seen stacks of 20 selling for about a gold each. Blackhand is a high population server, so prices could easily be higher on different servers.

And here’s the URL to the fishing site I list in just about every fishing post I reply too:

If you can't find the +100 ones, just use the +75 lures. They'll work just fine in a pinch and they're unlimited supply. Just keep in mind the minimum skill needed to fish different zones, and you'll be fine.

280 - Hellfire Peninsula.
305 - Zangarmarsh east (Umbrafen Lake, The Lagoon).
355 - Terokkar Forest (Silmyr Lake, water near Tuurem)
355 - Zangarmarsh west (Marshlight Lake, Sporewind Lake, Serpent Lake).
380 - Nagrand (including Halaa and the Elemental Plateau)
380 - Netherstorm (Eco-Dome Midrealm).
395 - Nagrand (Lake Sunspring and Skysong Lake)
405 - Terokkar Forest (Blackwind Lake, Lake Ere'Noru, Lake Jorune and Silmyr Lake) <---requires flying mount to access these.

The closer you are to the minimum, the more misses you'll get. At minimum plus 95, you will no longer miss at all.

I promised myself that I would not leave Zangarmarsh until I got my fishing skill to 350. So I now have 44 levels to go. Assuming 11 casts/level and 15 sec/cast (to include auto-loot and casting time) - and no lost fish - then I have roughly two hours of fishing to do. Doesn't seem so bad I guess :)

Another option, especially if you're still getting "fish got away" in Zangarmarsh is head back to a lower level area in Azeroth so you are guaranteed a skill up point from every cast.

One possibility is to head to STV on Sunday afternoon and fish the Tastyfish pools for the weekly fishing contest. They are available from 2-4pm server time. You have the possibility of catching three rare fish that will reward you with fishing gear/enhancements (+5 hat, +5 boots, +5 line) when turned in. You don't even necessarily need to try to win the contest, but just fishing the pools for the contest will take your mind off the fact that you're leveling fishing.

I find it's best to stretch out the OL stretch of leveling fishing, because it's grueling as hell. Try maybe 30-45 minutes a day and you'll be done in a few days' time. Trying to cram it all in will probably drive you nuts.

If you don't mind going back on promises to yourself or can delay that promise, another route you can do is level to 70 then resume fishing (if leveling is relatively fast for you).

At 70, you get access to the daily fishing quest. As Calabar mentioned, the quest rewards, in addition to the 100+ lures, give you a shot at a fishing hat & line.

But the good thing about daily is that if you are not at max skill while doing them, you are guarenteed to get skill ups every 10-12 casts. Since you are doing the daily for the rewards, the skill ups are an added bonus. Makes leveling the skill alot less tedious.

I always like accomplishing mutiple objectives by doing one task. Saves time.

And at 70, you'll have a flying mount making it easy to fly to fishing spots.

I started the dailes at about 330-340 skill. Could do all the fishing dailies reliably except Nagrand. Some of the dailies it seems like you'll never get the required catch. I fished for the baby crocolisk once and it took about 40-50 casts before I caught it. As frustrating as that was timewise, I did get 4 skill ups out of the deal. Made the timesink a little more palatable.

These are all good pieces of advice. Thanks. I didn't mean to imply that I was going to level to 350 in one shot. I generally fish one or two lures at a time, so 10-20 min max. And Wow promises to myself never mean much, other than the one about not playing too often. As much as I like the game, with work, family, sports, etc, WoW is my lowest priority and I plan to keep it that way.
Cheers.

10-11 catches a skill point is the norm post 300 skill.

There's also a quest in Lower City that rewards a +20 fishing pole (for those of us who are Alliance).

Just something I thought I'd mention, although it's been alluded to above. Where you fish, i.e. the zones fishing difficulty in relation to your fishing skill, makes absolutely no difference with regard to whether you get a fishing gain or not. It is totally based on number of successful casts. So if you're just fishing for gains and don't care about making gold or what you catch, then train fishing in a starter area with a low fishing skill requirement. Especially at higher fishing skill where it requires an average of 11.5 casts per gain, you'll appreciate not missing. Although it's worth mentioning also that once you get to a certain skill you can fish just about anywhere in Azeroth without missing a cast, especially if you have +fishing gear and lures. I prefer to just train fishing without using lures and worrying about outside distractions. It's already tedious enough to level fishing...

The spirit of this post is true. We can take our fishing skill from 1 to 375 by fishing only in a newbie area. But the bolded line is a bit misleading. We don’t gain fishing skill based upon how often we cast, but by the number of successful catches. In other words, if a loot window doesn’t open we won’t get a skill point. We don’t have to loot whatever is inside the window if we don’t choose to, but it has to open to count towards our skill.

I am amking a killing and skilling up my fishing by going to the Barrens and getting Deviate fish..They sell for 12-15Gs per stack...10 Levels of fishing is about 2-4 stacks of deviate fish.

Good luck

Well that's what I meant by "successful casts"... I guess I should remember to clarify my posts a bit more.

I figured it was. No offence intended.

The only reason I tried to clarify it is because I’ve spoken to people who thought that all they had to do was cast their line to get skill points.
