If you wanna just grind it up... The plaguelands are a good place for that.

Or you can blow a bunch of gold on ore and get most the way through smelting. I think throium stops around 290 so you have to hit the last 10 yourself.

It is much much faster than spending several days trying to grind it out.

Same. Post-BC that place is EMPTY so you're never fighting over nodes.

Once you can mine rich thorium veins, Un'goro circuits are pretty good too.

This is an interestingly timed post. Yesterday I decided to rearrange some skills on my two horde characters. By blood elf hunter had skinning and flower picking. The other has mining and tailoring. I’ve decided I want my blood elf to have engineering so I’d also like him to have mining. I’ll then drop mining off my other character and have him take up skinning.

So yesterday Vanyal dropped his 375 flower picking and took up mining. By the end of the day he had 275 mining, just enough to mine rich thorium nodes. At your skill level mining mithril will still give you points most of the time. By 270 mithril is still green, but the skill ups are rare. I really like the Badlands for iron and mithril. Lots of it spawns in that zone and for higher level characters the mob all but ignore you. And don’t forget about dark iron. I believe you can start mining that for skill ups at 230. I gained much of my later points from mithril and dark iron in the tunnels beneath Searing Gorge

Once you hit 270 you’ll need small thorium and any truesilver you happen upon. There are several zones that are good for finding small thorium. I rode back and fourth between Burning Steeps and Searing Gorge. Sadly, there were a lot of others out mining as well, so the pickings were rather slim. But I managed to get what I needed. In the past I’ve also mined small thorium in the Crater. And the plague lands work as well. But don’t give up on mithril. The random generator was kind to me last night. After a long string of no skill ups on mithril once I hit 270, I got four points in a row leaving me with needing just one point to reach my goal.

Agree with Calabar that this was an interestingly timed post and others who mentioned that Burning Steppes is the place to be. Last night I returned my toon from Outlands as I was foolish enough to go there with a mining of 252 and missed out on a fortune over 5 levels. So, I headed back to Azor. Burning Stepps is LOADED with mithril, dark iron, small thorium and rich thorium. So I started there and made a full circuit of the map. Keep in mind the ogre mound (Boulderfist Rock?) on the NE of the map has 3 entrances into it (2 low and 1 high). Each section contained at least 2 mines (usually small thorium or dark iron), so there's an average of 6 levelling points in a single run of just the mountain. So I was circuiting the map, entering the ogre mound, circling the map, repeat till 300.

Two advantages (maybe 1 depending on your opinion);
- It requires a bit of grinding at the ogre mound, but it does get ya a few drops.
- At the end of gaining my 48 points I had 60 mithrils, 58 thoriums, 18 dark iron ores, and 3 green drops of level 48-53, some good cash was made on the grind.

The disadvantage:
- Quite a few people mine in the area, so you're going to have to cruise around quite a bit in order to catch the mine respawns.

Overall when I ran it, there were only 1 or 2 other miners, but neither was entering the ogre caves. The grind to 300 ran about 2 hours and I made (estimating for my server) about 60-80g. If you choose to enter the ogre mound, tack on a bit of time for the ogre grinds (mine went very quite quick but I'm 66, guessing at 62 shouldn't be all that much more).

This is perfect timing, I have a shamman miner on the verge of outlands looking for thorium. I will check out Burning Steppes tonight -- never been there, so a new zone is always a plus. Here's my question: Should I (ideally) get mining to 300 or can someone with 280-290 skillup enough in HFP? My flower-pickin druid was already 300 when he hit OL (so much easier to level herbing) but I was surprised at all the old-world herbs like Dreamfoil lying around. Is there much thorium in OL or is it all stuff that requires 300+ mining?

There is no thorium in Outland. There is no overlap like with herbing. You must get your mining skill up to 300 in Azeroth before you'll be able to mine Fel Iron veins in HFP.

In Un'goro Crater, the silithid cave in the south central part of the map was always full of thorium and seldom ever had anyone mining it. I also liked doing loops in Winterspring as well, particularly around the yetis and the furbolgs in the east.

The veins in Eastern Plaguelands always felt like they were spread out too far to allow for effective circuits, particularly if there was another individual there for the same purpose.

this is the problem with the lower xp needed to level to 60. You outrun your skills in particular mining (probably herb too, but don't have personal experience in that one)

Can't believe I find myself complaining that I level too fast now. Oh well, hit 60 bought my epic and then went back to farming for skill ups.
