(This is all considering you are a warrior/paladin)
Just thought that I would finally get to the bottom of a question that has been nagging at me for awhile. (And please be kind if I am missing something obvious :P)
Almost every blacksmith I meet seems to be a weaponsmith. But wouldn't it make more sense to become an armorsmith?
My reasoning:
You only have two weapon slots, and 7 (?) armor slots. Therefore, you will have more slots to fill with armor than weapons when you get to 70. For a weapon, you could just get a PvP weapon if you intend to PvP. If you intend to tank, then you could run heroic Mech (which is pathetically easy) and get The Suneater, and start running Kara for better weapons.
As an armorsmith, you could make armor to fill your armor slots. Since there are more armor slots, wouldn't that mean you would have to spend more time/money to get all your armor if you were a weaponsmith?
Wouldn't it make more sense to be able to make all your armor yourself, and only need to rely on drops for one weapon?
Again, please be nice if I am missing something obvious here :P

Armorsmithing seems to be incredibly one-sided, the BoP Armorsmith armors seem to be primarily for tanking, from what I could tell.
A Solo/DPS Warrior/Paladin would probably want Weaponsmithing if he intended to do DPS, as the Weaponsmithing weapons look pretty damn sweet if you ask me.
A tank, however, would probably want Armorsmithing and I am beginning to think that I might want to switch from Axesmith to Armorsmith.

Ironically, while you're right that there are far more armor slots than weapon slots, weaponsmithing has a much more diverse range of craftables than armorsmithing.
As an Armorsmith/Weaponsmith, there are only a handful of recipes that are exclusive - weaponsmiths can make most armor and armorsmiths can make most weapons. So we really only care about "the good stuff." Armorsmithing has only 1 exclusive BoP epic set, the chest pieces that ends with Bulwark of the Ancient Kings. A solid piece to be sure but it's the only thing you get as an armorsmith. Weaponsmithing on the other hand is further divided into Hammersmith, Axesmith, and Swordsmith, each of which have their own sets of 1-handed and 2-handed weapons that are very good (better than any easily accessible PvP weapons).

That's odd, I just looked at the armorsmith stuff and it looks like it is DPS too... that confuses me, a lot.... but ok.

There is one more epic set from Armorsmithing but it's mail and geared towards Hunters (and possibly Enh Shamans, though it lacks Str).
There are a few more items you can exclusively make as an armorsmith/weaponsmith (check Alla's Blacksmithing page towards the bottom for a list), but as you can see the vast majority is pre-BC and BoE. In fact, there's only two items between the pre-BC stuff and the pieces I've mentioned, a blue 65 piece, one for Warriors/Ret Paladins, one for Hunters, both of which are nothing to write home about.
