Speaking of Alchemy discoveries...Follow

#1 Mar 19 2008 at 2:15 AM Rating: Decent
I'm 371 Alchemy...and I still haven't had one.

Not one.

I've made well over 200 potions/elixirs (Mad Alchemist's, Unstable Mana, Volatile Health, Major Healing, Major Agility, Draenic Wisdom, Major Defense, Super Mana, etc...even the 5 Major Dreamless Sleep for my potion mastery quest.)

I don't sell any herbs...I gather them, I stockpile them in the bank for a while, and then when I've got some time to kill I buy some vials and make some potions, etc.

I've only done 5 or so transmutes (Earth -> Water, Earthstorm Diamond) and no discoveries there either, though I'd have to say I'm not surprised about that given how few I've done.

Is it common to go so long without a discovery? I've got 2.5 stacks of Ancient Lichen and 6 Fel Lotus sitting in the bank that I'm itching to use on something cool, but I'm almost starting to wonder if I'm not doing something wrong.

I don't think you do something wrong.

A discovery just happens randomly, based on an average chance. You might make 3 potions and get 3 discoveries, or make 3000 potions and get 0 discoveries.

It's like loot: some people kill a few bosses and get every drop they want. Other people run instances over and over again and nothing usefull drops.

You aren't doing anything wrong, it's just random. Furthermore, 200 potions is nothing. If you really want to get some discoveries, find out what potions you can make a profit on (or really just break even) by buying herbs on the AH and listing the made pots. If you are just making pots for yourself, and you don't use a whole lot, you aren't going to get a ton of discoveries (which generally require volume because they are so rare). I wouldn't complain about not getting any discoveries (especially if I wasn't capped at 375 - meaning I didn't spend "that" much time leveling what is the easiest crafting profession).

Keep at it! You'll eventually get something!

Just a follow up...I wound up getting *2* discoveries today...Super Rejuv. Potion while making more Mad Alchemist's Potions, and Transmute: Primal Life to Primal Earth while making an Earthstorm Diamond. This is good news in a sense, as I have tons of Primal Life sitting around the bank after herbing my way through Outland, and I picked up the Earth -> Water transmute from Sporeggar rep a while back. Life -> Earth for skillup and then Earth -> Water for profit. Not time efficient, but I'm not quite geared to be farming all the motes for Primal Might just yet, so I'll take what I can get for the time being.

I got the same transmute discovery yesterday. Pretty useless unless you're doing a 2 step thing like that.

I'm really stoked though, I finally managed to pick up the Mageblood Elixir recipe for a somewhat reasonably price (600g when I haven't seen it under 1k in weeks). On my server it's actually profitable in that I can buy herbs off the AH, make 'em, and sell them back for more. Not only is this a reasonable source of income, if the demand keeps up I can pump them out as discovery fodder.

I would sell the primal lifes (they go for about 12g on my server) and buy up primal earths (3.5gish on my server), probably make more money that way, won't level quite as fast, but wouldn't be a drop like before.

What he said. Not only more money just because of the difference in price, but you get to do twice more transmutes this way compared to your plan.

That's what I'll be doing now. I logged in today with 374 alchemy, and Transmute Primal Life -> Earth was the most readily available option for a guaranteed skillup. I still have 16 Primal Life in the bank, and I'm in the mode for some epic flyer gold so I'm going to start trickling them into the AH over the next week . I also noticed for the first time today that I missed out on the Skyfire Diamond recipe from Thrallmar, so I grabbed that and I'm probably going to focus on that as my daily transmute for a while (won't take long to farm 2 primal air and fire and the gems come cheap and easy from auction).

I finished making all of the Elixirs I need for my Elixir Mastery quest...and after 2 complete runs of Black Morass, I'm still short 1 essence from those damn rift lords/keepers. No biggie...still hoping for an Hourglass to drop from the second boss and even though Kara attunement is being phased out with 2.4, it would still be good to have my key so another BM run is in order at some point.

You want cash from Xmutes just score yourself xmute earth to water - on my server the earth sells for 3-5g while I can easily unload the water for 20g - I bang out my xmute every day and earn at least 15g profit in the process - as things stand, my alchy will be able to buy its flying mount as soon as it dings 70.

I've only gotten two discoveries so far - xmute fire to earth and xmute water to earth - hurrah - I might as well have gotten xmute gold into lead for all the value those two are. >_<

I might also note I didn't make any discoveries till after I'd hit 375 although if I'm reading you right, you've made discoveries without being 375 yet?

seems like you did read him correctly that he Discovered before hitting 375.

my hunter had his first discovery while powerlevling to 375 as well. max 375 level is not required to make a discovery, just lucky as anything to get a discovery in your first 75-100 attempts while leveling up to skill cap/375

Reading this reminded me about my needing an alchemist to make me a mercurial stone. I furnish that mats and a tip, but if that person wanted green gems included for a tip, it would help us both.

There are always options to running to the AH and spending money. Also motes of fire drop when mining, not as often as motes of earth but not bad to see one or two drop.

That kinda reminds me of my experience running Shadow Labyrinth, Aurelius. I took me 11 runs for Sonic Spear to drop the first time. It also dropped on my 12th run. Go figure.

But which time did you actually get the Spear? I have seen it once, same day a new 70 hunter was on the run. Of course he won it. Oh well more runs will come.

I got mine on my second run and since then have sharded two and have one in my bank with the Winter's Chill enchant on it for ***** and giggles.

I appear to have cornered the marked on Major Agility and Healing Power elixirs on my realm...not through any shady dealings, but it often seems I'm the only one who ever sells them in any significant quantity. I listed 6 stacks of 5 Major Agility elixirs today and they had sold within 10 minutes...I listed 6 more and they were gone within half an hour. This obviously makes me happy as it's not only quick gold towards my epic flyer, but it keeps me producing more elixirs that give me a chance at a discovery. I got Flask of Mighty Restoration today and was so excited thinking at a glance that it was finally a flask worth making only to realize that ya...no, that's **** too. I'll keep at it though...at least they're starting to happen for me.

How much are you selling the major AGI pots for?

I sell them in stacks of 5 for 10g each. That was the common price when I started making them (the realm my Hunter is on, they'd be going for 15g/stack quite easily...in fact, I could rarely find them in stacks...it was mostly singles that I'd buy up 1-3 at a time as they were available.) I gather the herbs necessary to make them while doing the "Gaining the Advantage" daily, brew them up, and put them on auction 4-6 listings (20-30 elixirs) at a time. I very, very rarely have them returned from auction these days, and I"d say overall they earn me 40-60g/day. Healing elixirs are my other strong seller...I sell them also in stacks of 5 for 13g, usually with Golden Sansam bought of auction for a pittance and Dreaming Glory I gather in the field. Between the two, I usually have 100-120g+ worth of elixirs on auction at any given time, and quite often they sell within an hour.

My level 61 Rogue with a skill level of 354 just discovered [wowitem=22866]Flask of Pure Death[/wowitem] last night while making a batch of Healing elixirs for the AH and Healing pots for myself.

My lock was very happy.

discovered both Super Rejuvs, and Flask of Relentless Assault.

im sure when im bored and the guild is running low on super Manas, ill make another batch to see what else i discover.

Up to 240 Super Mana potions and no discoviers. I HATE random luck. On the other hand, I'm actually breaking even on them so I can't complain all that much.

On Shadowsong (EU) it is quite common for people with their Mastery to offer their services for free via trade channel. Basically ''Elixir Master available, no charge if you bring the herbs and vials to me at Scryer Bank. You keep all procs.''.

The more desperate types add ''50g bounty if I get a discovery.'' to drum up business.

Personally I got two alchemists (both 375 skill) and after a year of transmuting and making sick amounts of potions I'm still missing Super Rejuv on my potion master and almost all discoveries on my transmute master. Random is random.

Yesterday I got my first discovery while making a skyfire diamond for someone. Primal Shadow to Primal Water. Not really useful, but cool all the same that I got a discovery :)
