ok so i posted a few weeks ago asking about how mastery works, and was excited to hit 68 so i cood become an elixir master. i rushed my way to 68 and grabbed the quest, and even went prot to get into a BM group. after 2 runs, i had completed the quest, made the elixirs and handed it in....
wow great, i now have a chance of making an extra elixir? why did i think that depending on ur mastery, ud be able to learn certain elixirs/potions/xmutes that the other masteries woodnt allow. instead, i havent learned any elixirs other then buying them from vendors in the outland.
did i get all hyped up about mastery too much? is the only difference of the masteries the fact that u get a chance to make an extra one once in a wile?

Yes.

However, I think you're shortchanging the benefit of the 'extra one once in a while.' It is, in fact, not necessarily only one extra (in my short time as an elixir spec I've seen 3 x5 procs), and you will get an extra one a lot. Recently my guild had me clear out the guild bank's herbs and make elixirs - I 'made' 200 elixirs (200 vials used), and ended up with around 250 total - that's a pretty significant extra amount (it helped that I saw two of those three x5 procs there)!
