Is Fishing a worthwhile pursuit in WoW or would I be better off spending time on levelling combat and trade skills.

Also could someone provide info on how quality of fish caught relates to WoW fishing skill levels, and also what type of non-fish loot items a WoW fisherman might obtain (and how these relate to WoW fishing skill levels).

Thanks,
Amphiaraus

I love fishing. My raid food comes from fishing, you can get primal water SUPER easy, plus the occasional goldenscale vendorfish :)

Although that's not a bad guide, I fount this tidbit in that fishing guide:

How To Make Gold By Fishing

With even a low skill in fishing, you can fish items that other people need. Even more gold can be earned if you also learn cooking along with fishing. Savory Deviate Delights sell well. There may also be a need for other cooked food used to regenerate health and add to character stats.

Unfortunately it's not the whole truth. The real fact of the matter is that you can make gold from fishing without knowing how to cook at all. Yes, cooked deviate fish sell for higher than uncooked ones, but they still sell. Then there are others, which can't be cooked, but are used by Alchemists - Firefin Snapper, Oily Blackmouth, and Stonescale Eels still bring in gold. Not as much as they did pre-TBC, but still a respectable amount. Then there is all the loot available from floating wreckage...

My goto fishing site is

El's Extreme Anglin'/. It's always had the information I've needed.

To answer (some) of the OPs question. Yes, fishing is definately worth it. Having the ability to buff through food is essential, I think, and fishing is a key source for specialty buffs (golden fishsticks for +heal, bluefin for +spell damage, and the +MP5 fish to go along with spicy crawdad and their +30 stam boost). It also facilitates leveling cooking in general so you can get access to the non-fish food buffs as well.

The quality of fish has no impact on leveling. You can level fishing from 0-375 in the ponds in TB or Org if you want (I leveled alot in Org while waiting for BGs). I don't recommend that because you can make good cash fishing and selling off what you don't need. This kicks in at a relatively low level for Horde folks and the Sagefish pools in the Barrens.

Non-fish items I've gotten are scrolls, leathers, ore, bars, green items, vendor trash, potions. Basically the random stuff you'd get from a lockbox or chest.

I just took up fishing (and cooking) 3 days ago on my lvl 70. I had avoided it before because it seemed so tedious to level up, but after hearing about some of the money that can be made (I'm still saving for that epic flyer) and the nice raid buffs, I dove intom and you could now say "I'm hooked".

I followed el's fishing guide, which was one of the 1st google entries, and after 3 days have cooking at 290 and fishing is at 255. Until I start fishing in Outlands, Deviate fish from the Barrens seem to sell pretty good and since I'm an alchemist, the oily blackmouth and firefin snappers have come in handy.

Lootwise I got a bunch of leather from the floating debris pools, "The One Ring" from the barrens, some deviate scales and several large "trophy" fish which dont seem to do anything, but make you feel better. Largest so far was a 56 pound catfish.

Your cooking skill will quickly surpass fishing, as it now takes about 6-8 catches before you gain one skill up. And I'd recommend cooking with fishing as there are quite a few fish recipes and you need to do something with all that stuff in your bags now.

@OP: Fishing can be a good money-maker, and it helps to break up the grind. I can herb for a while, do dailies for a while, and fish to avoid the monotony of just doing one thing to make gold. I fished an Icefin Bluefish up the other day, just one as I was passing time waiting for a guildie who wanted help with a quest, and sold it for 1.5g on the AH.

You can fish in Outlands now. Get the +20 pole if you don't already have it, the quest is in Lower City in Shatt. Put a +100 lure on that you can get from Juno Dufrain (I love that name), the guy standing by the lake in Cenarion Refuge. He also sells the book to open up the cap at 300.

Do that and fish right beside Dufrain and you will have no trouble at all. I did this until 275ish, and the lake area in northwestern Zangar becomes easier to fish at that point (I've heard the fishing level in that area is higher than near Cenarion Refuge, and can confirm that because at 375 without any lure I was getting some "getaways").

Edit: grammar

I have 6 horde chars (in Aegwynn) and 6 alliance chars (in Azshara).

I am thinking have one of my chars on each server level up in fishing seems reasonable. Meanwhile all my other chars would ignore fishing to concentrate on other things.

My chars (with one exception) are crafters/gatherers and help one another daily, sending items and money back and forth.

i leveled fishing on my first toon, and holy crap was it boring and not worth the time. i persoanly find fishing to be a giant waist of time and SO BORING.
i am apparently in the minority on this.

i cook at lvl 375, i do that daily and get all the fish food buffs i need if i choose the fish reward.
...yes fish have some great food buffs...+heals/spir, +stam/MP5, +30stam/spir, and a few others...but most of the same buff foods can be found on cooked meats...ok not the MP5 and not the +heals...but i play alot of meelle class so i dont care about those.

dont do it. there is so much more this game can offer that is fun and exciting...rather then....cast......................hook.............o crappy fish, or vendor trash, or.................fianlly the fish/primal/whatever i wanted.

do a daily in 5 to 10 minutes. take that 12 gold to the AH and buy fish other suckers are selling. let other people waist their time fishing while you are having FUN in a dungen, or questing or whatever....anything is better then fishing.

Nope. You are in the majority (which is a good thing, in my opinion). Becuase you and most other people don't have the patience for fishing, the money fish remain profitable. The bottom of the market would drop out if everyone did it.
