goblin vs gnomish?Follow

#1 Jan 07 2008 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
I guess this thread have been up before. But been some time, and there has been some changes in 2.3 I belive. So any advice in what to choose, gnomish or goblin engineering?
I have a lvl 70 paladin healer that does lots of raiding and some instances and pvp. I really want the plate-healing helm. Please give me some of your clever thoughts or maby links? Cheers ppl!

2.3 didn't really do anything to change the gnomish/goblin debate. Goblin engineers still get more bombs, gnomish ones still get more toys. You might want to read up on them more before you choose - here would be a good place to start.

As for the helms, you can make and use those regardless of specialty. Same goes for the flying mounts.

Thanks MetalM for advices and very nice link. So my conclusion is chosing either gnomish or goblin will not be very much difference for raiding? Or is there any pala-healer out there using any of them alot when in raids?

The rocket launcher has really long range and from what I heard pretty decent damage, where as the Gnome chicken thing won't work at all in raids (not sure about its effect in PvP though). This is all I can really think of. The useful stuff are universal (ie. Epic Headpiece, Repair Bot).

you can get an engineer of the opposite choice to make you the items specific to their membership, as long as its not bop or membership specific [a bar few are]

I would suggest gnomish because there is more things only gnomish engineers can use and bombs arent as useful as some of the "toys" you get with gnomish

To be fair the toys are more for novelty than practical uses (though I've yet to use any explosives because they're too expensive). In raid/instance, rocket launcher > chicken thing.

Gnomish vs Goblin doesn't really matter. As someone already said pretty much all the usefull craftables are universal. Epic headpiece, flying mount, mote extractor, potion injectors, and repair bots.

Considering you are a paladin(Hunters I would recommend going with goblin specifically for the jumper cables, because FD+Jumper Cables could save lots of time after a wipe) look at the specific things each faction can make and see which items you would have more fun playing with, because that's the most you are going to get out of the faction specific stuff, is toys you enjoy playing with.

As a side not has anyone figured out why the goblin specialist is in Tanaris, but the gnomes monopolized the portal for tanaris, while goblin engineers get sent way the hell up in Winterspring.

The jumper cables require a goblin engineer to make but any engineer can use them. Hence I suggest gnomish engineering for the trinkets. Buy your bombs and jumper cables from a goblin engineer.

Hey Folks,

I guess it depends on the class. I'm currently running a 37th level Fire Spec'd Mage, with Eng at 225. While I've had lotsa bombs in my inventory over the levels, I just never seem to use them, resorting to my spells or wands. I guess I'm too thrifty and they cost a lot more then mana when I toss one.

Because of that, I went with the Gnome side of the house. I found a script for the jumper cables earlier on, as a drop, and have had a set equipped, so no need for that side of the house...the Shrink Ray is fun, the Goggles help, and I'll be building a set of Rocket Boots just as soon as my tailor builds the base boots for me. Keep a squirrel for conversations sake and a Compact Harvester for tougher times...Haven't done the Battle Chicken yet...
YMMV...
Respectfully,
Harry

Since you brought back the old topic... I would agree, a mage doesn't need bombs. My warrior loves the stun grenades. Took down 3 mobs with its help. Any AoE I can add are great. The money spent on a bomb saves the run from the GY and the repair bill. I have only just hit 300, 8 levels before I get the GOOD stuff, but it is a fun craft, and if you watch yourself and have lots of alts to feed the mats, you can do engineering in a low cost, never cheap though.

I'm a goblin engy on my hunter but I do kind of regret not going Gnomish. IMO the Rocket launcher/ Gnomish chicken thing both give +45 stam and are meant to be used in PVP, not raids and such. Pre BC, the sides were greatly differenciated and you could make different items at the peak of engineering but Post BC (and the only useful things about the specialization) are the Dimensional Rippers and the Ultrasafe Teleporters.

Atm, Gnomish engineering is more useful because their teleporters take you to either Toshley's station, which is close to Gruul's (and a short trip to TK) and Gadgetstan which is close to COT instances. Goblin Dimensional Rippers take you to Area 52 which is close to Gruul's/TK and Everlook which is close to ... nothing -_-.

So atm, based on post BC developments and inventions, gnomish engineering seems to have more utility.

I've got a healing spec pally and I can tell you that engineering is a real life saver!

The toon is only 42 but the goblin engineering is definately the way to go - the extra firepower really helps in PvE and I can't imagine it not helping in PvP and raiding either.

What it ultimately comes down to is -

gnome = mostly toys and some useful items

goblin = heavy DPS, some useful, some toys

As a healing spec pally, the DPS will be a bigger help when it hits the fan then the toys will.

The Gnomish Poultryizer holds utility for pulling casters; unable to cast, the mob runs to you. As a protection paladin, I use it for pulls in which LoS pulling isn't feasible.

In addition, the Gnomish Poultryizer provides another spell interrupt for use in PvP, truly a lifesaver against those pesky warlocks, priests, and holy paladins. (Unfortunately, it cannot be used in arena matches.)
