Engineering... eh...Follow

#1 Dec 17 2007 at 4:54 AM Rating: Decent
So right now I've got Enchanting and Engineering as profs for my rogue. This is of course, having one of my alts as a miner. But I still feel like I'm getting no where with Engineering. So I'm thinking about dropping it and taking up a new profession. Any suggestions?

I'm more so looking for something that I could make money with. I do have other alts that are gatherers (skinning, miner, herb).

Edit: I'm a 60 Human Rogue, and thanks in advance for any help.

What are you looking for in a profession? When you say you're "not getting anywhere," I assume you mean you want one you can level quickly and easily. Mining, skinning and herbing would be the obvious choices there, but if you have enough money you could try levelling Alchemy using AH-bought items.

I'm assuming that it's not awesome gear you're after, since Engineering offers plenty of that, and you're not out to make money, since Engineering recently became a highly profitable gathering profession.

Making money would be nice. But yeah, awesome gear is no big deal to me at the moment (I just like to enjoy myself when I play... not so much to get the best gear possible).

Since my alts are moreso lower level, I can't really level up my mining on them at the moment since that usually depends on zone (as with a lot of the gathering profs). When you put it that way, for some reason, it seems as though mining would be the more profitable profession, gathering-wise. At least on my server it has been (selling copper bars for over 1g a stack on my low-level alt).

Thank you for the tip!

Two sentences at odds with each other. Are your gatherers making money, or are they wasting it by feeding your crafting?

point 1: Unless you are a high enough level and have enough mats to level a crafting profession to a very high level, you will lose gold. Even then, crafting professions are mainly to make stuff for your own toons.

point 2: Having two or more toons in the same gathering profession does not (I repeat not) create a toon that's in competition with your other gatherers. YOU CANNOT TAKE THEM BOTH OUT AT THE SAME TIME. Even if you hit the same nodes that another of your toons has picked, you will have given them time to re-spawn. I have never had two skinners skin the same body.

point 3: "(skinning, miner, herb)" are not the only gathering professions that make gold. There are also (dis)enchanting and fishing. Additionally, there is cloth farming, which is useful for first aid and totally wasted on tailoring.

They're making money. I was thinking at first to use my miner to get the mats for engineering, but the mining level is no where near the level it needs to be for the mats I would need for engineering.

I'm up to 60. This is why I took up Enchanting at the beginning, because I wanted to be able to enchant my own things. (This was, of course, before I joined a guild... even so there are only two of us and our enchanting levels are only *maybe* 5-10 levels apart)

None of my toons have 'duplicate' professions.

I've been selling the stuff I do disenchant and have been doing quite well with the AH and making money with the stuff. And it's a good point you made there, because a lot of people (myself included) don't think of the other professions like fishing and cloth farming.

Thanks a lot for that too. Now that I've gotten my first aid up to almost 375, I'd have no use for the linen, or silk cloths.

Engineering is so little used for $$ makeing.. it isn't funny.

My husband (Prot War) decided at 70 to drop skinning and either take up BS or Engineering. We decided on getting the Goggles for him in the end.

While it DID cost a ton to raise it (his mining was already capped and we bought most of the mats till Fel Iron level and even then most cause.. we wanted it done sooner than later) It has so paid off in the end.

With the fixing of the cloud spawns.... it's amazing for $$ now!! In total honesty, mining in Nagrand with an epic flyer, for an hour nets about... 4-5 stacks of Adamentite Ore.. and at least 10 primal Airs. Our server is engineer dead though so that could easily vary!!

As for that though, you really DO need the mining to make it worth while. Sure.. I can pull over 300g an hour getting primal air's with him, I can also add another 150+ for ore on top of that.

I would say... if you aren't doing engineering for the gear, you probably WOULD be better off dropping it. Other than if you can get some rare recipe drops (Scope of Attuneman for one which sells for almost 400g on my server.. lol maybe our economy IS a bit screwy huh?) The only thing you can really sell to other's that want is the Tank Gun. And... honestly makeing that yourself with those mats.. is almost NOT worth it!!

Thanks Jasalth... yeah I do notice that there's a lot of engineers out there in our realm trying to sell that Gyro...gun. But I finally did decide to try out mining. Putting up stacks of copper bars for about 1g 25-50s, they sell pretty quickly. Now just to get past that 'tin and silver' blackhole.

Inside the spider cave at the exit from wetlands on the run to IronForge. There are tin veins in there with the quest veins (Incendicite? - you don't need the quest to mine them) that give skill-ups, all the way to 125 if I'm not mistaken. The veins spawn fast enough that if you are alone in there you will never run out, and if you are in there with one other person you may have to do some running around but I always found one waiting somewhere.

If you want the quest, you must be level 19 and you get it from one of the siege engine drivers at Steelgrill's Depot. The spiders inside the cave are L16-17, and there is a rare elite spider that drops a nice shield that removes poison on use.

Engineering has traditionally been the way to the poorhouse because it consumes tons of mats and sells very little of use to non-engineers (who make it for themselves anyway).

Now things are better at high end engineering, where engineers have advantages harvesting certain kinds of primal motes, can make potions for sale, and, of course as a side benefit, can now make their own flying mount and epic flying mount. But grinding engineering up is a costly experience in terms of mats and the mats that you are not selling (assuming you have mining as well, which most engineers seem to have).

If you're looking to make money - don't have any profession. The amount of time spent gathering mats and levelling up through all the junk stages ( <200 ) would be better spent looting and questing - and selling on the proceeds. Invaribly, there is nothing you need to make that you can't buy or get an equal as loot - except, of course, engineering where the items are unique to engineers. So choose your trade for fun not cash!

Yeah my profs now are mining and enchanting. I sell all of the stuff I mine, and the lower level mats on enchanting that I've disenchanted I sell... along with the higher ones that I don't use yet.

Since I've been to outlands, i've been getting arcane dust like crazy, which have been selling for about 2g for just 1 of them on my server. So I've been selling those lately.

Was able to fund my one alt to get her mount, and still have a lot of money left. =)
