level 43 Warrior, Mining 250 / BS 150

I have been leveling Mining consistently from the start and farming the mats for Gold. In the beginning (this is my first char) I neglected BS, but as of recently I have been trying to level-up. Now that I have a nice pile of gold, should I spend it in order to level the crap out BS? And if yes, what spec should I go for? Also, How good are the items you are able to create as a high level BS in comparison to the drops available to you at that level?

I suggest you look into a guide

And check the FAQ where you can learn more about the specializations

Which BS specialization you go will depend ALOT upon what you are going to do come end game.

You have to weigh what you're going to be doing (raiding, arena, rep grinding) and what is available for rewards/drops/loot. Go with the specialization that lacks what you're doing in endgame.

You ask a difficult question - for me, at least. BS is a money sink for me. I have it on my L51 Warrior alt and its at 260+. I am not using, and have never used, any weapon or armor on my Warrior that I made, and I keep him well-geared. But I have my main in Outlands to make gold with.

Now here's the catch. I do use sharpening stones. I love sharpening stones. I really spent a good deal of gold leveling BS to the point where I could make dense sharpening stones and I always use them on both my Warrior and my Pally. I'm not sure what level stone you can make at 225 (your cap until you reach L50), but I'm pretty sure I was actually buying stones on the AH until I reached dense.

So, if you like adding +damage to your weapon (and what Warrior doesn't?), then check the prices for the highest stone you'll be able to make at 225, look over a power-leveling guide to get a sense of the investment required, and make your decision. There are some dry spots in the leveling curve, so you can spend the time until you power-level looking for recipes on the AH at good prices.

As far as the items you create at "high level" go, I don't think you need to level BS now if your only reason in doing so is the specialty you will choose. You have plenty of time for that.

I will add one other thing. I have never had any luck selling mithril spurs. However, I know a Warrior who insists that he sells them for 2 to 4 gold in IF on the weekend simply by offering them (installation free of course!) in chat.

If you are Horde make Tarren Mill your home.

Go north to Alterac Mountains, then back to Tarren Mill, then to Kagrand in Badlands and go south of there.

This is a good mithril run (and iron as well which is still probably useful for you).

Won't take too long to get lots of mithrils that can be converted to smithing skillups, not to mention LOTS of sharpening stones!

Well dude...Ill give you my experience..

Right now, ive got a 70 warrior, 375 mining, 365 smithing.

WASTE! I went swordsmith to make the lionheart blade for pvp...What happens? S1 gear is now available only at the cost of a short amount of BG grind time. What was the cost of getting that sword? THOUSANDS of gold spent at the AH, on top of probably thousands of gold more, of forgone money that i could have made by just selling my ore.

Sure, out of axe spec you can get a few nice pve weapons...But seriously...The calibur of weapon you get out of smithing vs stuff that is available through BG's or very low end raiding is ridiculous.

Even IF i was to upgrade my lionheart/thunder/mooncleaver (<--I think thats the first tier 2h axe..correct me if im wrong) all the way to the third tier, that would mean COUNTLESS hours of heroic instance runs, competing for nethers, along with other insanely priced, or pain in the *** mats to attain. All that, verses a couple hours of arena a week for maybe a month or two,and youve got the S2 two hander at your fingertips, and more recently, a far superior S3 twohand wpn if you are any good.

Yes, my point of view here is a little more PvP oriented, but even for PvE, whats the best you can get? ONE or two one-hand wpns that are probably easily replaced by some rep-grind with another faction? not worth it...

All in all, weaponsmithing = WASTE OF SO MUCH TIME/MONEY/EFFORT.

As for armorsmithing, I havent heard much, or know much about it, but I am willing to bet its probably just as ineffective.

Drop smithing imo and take up something else imo

I dinged 70 on my warrior with 375 mining / 260 BS. At this point I had already grabbed enough gear to be a formidable tank and BS just didn't seem worth it anymore. The few pieces of gear I did want required mats that although required some time, weren't hard to farm. So I dropped BS and picked up skinning to help save up for my epic flyer. The amount of gold and time it takes to level up BS just didn't seem worth it to me. As Kazump said, there is better gear out there that can be obtained with less effort.

Really interesting guys. I'm starting a Warrior and was considering taking up BS and Mining.

So what is a good alternative. Just do mining and sell the mats? Is mining profitable?

Worth taking up engineering or enchanting for a Warrior?

Thanks.

Using hindsight, I probably wouldn't have chosen BS on my warrior, especially as he was my first character.

At present I am sitting at 374, so I would be loathe to give it up. I will wait and see what WotLK brings in the way of new recipes.

I also chose Master Axesmith as my speciality and am presently wielding http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28434 and it is definitely working for me as a DPS warrior. The upgrades are a bit of a pain though. The Mooncleaver requires 8 Primal Nethers (which means lots of heroic runs), and the final one (Bloodmoon) requires 5 Nether Vortex (which drop from trash in SSC - which I will probably never see).

On the flip side, as has already been mentioned, S1 gear is now available for honour and the 2H axe from that is comparable to my Lunar Crescent. Even a trip into Kara or Gruuls could net me a better one.

So to summarise. BS is very costly with not a lot to show for it at the end, in terms of being able to sell craftables to your fellow players. It is primarily for your personal benefit. So OP, if there is some good looking gear that you like the look of, then go for it, otherwise you should be able to get by without it.

OK - Here is my opinion.

Mining/BS is a VERY difficult combination. Here is why: The mats you need to keep BS max'd out (which is needed if you want to use it) are in higher level regions. So it is difficult to farm.

For example, when you hit lvl 40, you'll want Heavy Mithril Pants or Heavy Mithril Breastplate. But Mithril is best farmed in Tanaris. At lvl 40, you are barely ready for Tanaris and it will be difficult to farm.

My suggestion - get mining on a main character and BS on an alt. As long as your main stays at a much higher level than your alt, the main can mine the mats necessary for your alt to raise BS and make effective BS items.

Example, have a lvl 70 farm Tanaris for Mithril (can do it very quickly with epic mount), and you can send the mats to your lvl 40 BS alt. Thus, you can easily make what you need, and it will cost you 0g. BS is only expensive if you buy mats from AH.

Hope that helps.
