In advance I know this will sound like a stupid question. For elemental leather working, do pattern drop from random mobs or are they only bought from the elemental trainer?
There are a few patterns that the trainer will teach you (Helm of Fire, some low level pants, the epics at 375) and you will find several drop patterns, most of which are rare.
Check out the Trade Skills links on the left bottom and you will see the ones that require patterns.

The trainer has a few, but there are quite a few patterns out there that drop from instance bosses or chests. I second to check out the link to the side.
