I have my fishing at a reasonable level (around 170) and wondering if it pays off, Besides cooking. Am i leveling this skill pointlessly or at the end do higher level fishing spots have fish of value.

Once you get close to 375 fishing, have some gear from the fishing extravaganza (Sundays in STV) and a flying mount, you will be able to go up to the three above-ground lakes in Terrokar Forest and catch Furious Crawdad. This is one way to get your cooking from 350 to 375, the fish cook up into a 30 stamina, 20 spirit well-fed buff (most excellent for us tanks) and the raw fish themselves can go for 1.5-2g EACH on the auction house - not bad for a 10-15% catchrate. You will need an effective skill of 475 to even think about catching Furious Crawdad and an effective skill of 525 (meaning each piece of fishing extravaganza gear plus an aquadynamic fish attractor) to prevent them from getting away.

My very first toon had the gold for his L40 mount when he was 32 - all through fishing. If you want to learn more about it, read the sticky. That's what it's there for.
