Is this available pre-expansion? I mine, so it would conflict, but I sure could use a boost in fishing and who doesn't love treasure?

Eh? I'm not finding anything that is even close to 'weather beaten journal' in Allakhazam's database. If that's something real, its unknown to me.

Weather-beaten Journal's getting added in 2.3. It doesn't say anything about requiring BC, and since it only requires 100 fishing skill, I'd guess not.

Im wondering though how difficult will it be to get this. I mean if this is as great as it sounds, there is no way Blizzard will make it easy. Again i think we will have all the hard core fishers spend 20 hours fishing for it. I am also wondering what zones it is fishable. I don't wanna to see 40 level 60 plus sitting at crystal lake west of Goldshire trying to get one of these

I don't think it's THAT great...and its BoP so its not like people can farm it...personally I think it should come automatically with fishing.
#8 Nov 08 2007 at 7:49 AM Rating: Decent
That would be too easy.

exactly, I mean, it's finding fishing nodes not some world shattering ability.

From El's Extreme Angling Guide...
Quote:
Drysc (Blizzard) originally announced, "Fishermen, and Fisherladies, will be able to track fishing nodes, similar to herbalism and mining. The ability will be learned from a journal you can find in fished-up crates."

The new "Find Fish" ability is taught by a Weather-Beaten Journal. The ability makes "nearby fishing nodes appear on the minimap" - just like tracking abilities for minerals and herbs. The journal binds when picked up, so cannot be traded (unless the original crate is traded and the journal remains unseen). A fishing skill of 100 is required to learn the ability. The picture shows the ability being used to highlight the location of nearby pools. The only pools the ability does not show are Schools of Tastyfish, found during the Stranglethorn Extravaganza (likely a bug).

The table below summarises the crate types Weather-Beaten Journals can be found in. Sample catch sizes are very low, so read the results with caution. Tentatively: once you have a journal in your inventory, or have learnt the Find Fish ability, you will no longer be able to find journals within crates. All the tests were done by destroying journals as soon as they were found.

Crates with Weather-Beaten Journal Crate Sample catches Percentage of crates with Weather-Beaten Journal
Curious Crate 30 43%
Heavy Supply Crate 43 11%
Iron Bound Trunk 28 11%
Mithril Bound Trunk 38 21%
Watertight Trunk 28 25%

Thanks to Graargh for confirming Heavy Supply Crates as a source. Tightly Sealed Trunk (30 catches) were found not to contain journals. Coastal lock-boxes were not tested.

Curious Crates seem to give the best catch rate, with almost half of all crates containing a Weather-Beaten Journal. Curious Crates are caught from any pool in Outland - about 4% of the catch (this may have been increased slightly, since I got 7-8% on the test server, however the sample is very small so prone to error). No pools primarily contain Curious Crates, which means that if you specifically want a journal, it may be easier to fish the pools of wreckage in Azeroth containing Iron Bound, Mithril Bound or Watertight Trunks.

For those with little fishing skill, the easiest source of journals are Watertight Trunks, which are found in floating wreckage pools in Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains and Wetlands. All these areas requiring just 55 skill to cast, 150 to stop get-aways. Experienced fishermen and women should find a journal easily, while fishing pools for other fish - they aren't terribly rare!

Will this ability work only when you are fishing or is it selectable like "find minerals" "find treasure" "herb" ?

Nevermind,,,it's a spell,,,so works just like the other "find ,,,"

Will Works out nice for my Enchanter/Jewelcrafter,,,,

to easily get this, have max fishing skill and fish the Steam Pump Flotsam pools around Coilfang. the journal only drops in crates, and these pools almost always yield crates. i got mine after three such pools, took me five minutes :)

edit:: the journal only requires 100 fishing to use, so i guess you can find it at a lower level.

got mine this morning. took 30 min of fishing the pools along southshore. finally got it out of a watertight trunk that came from a floating wreckage pool. i had pulled about 5 or 6 trunks out of regular fish pools. it was the third trunk i pulled out of the wreckage pool. the first pool i tried was also a wreckage pool but i only got stranglekelp out of it, go figure.

The only way I could see people trying to market these things is by opening the chest but not taking the things out of it (AFAIK - it only becomes bound to you when you take it out of the box).

Oddly enough, I got one my first catch today in Tanaris..but then 15 mithril boxes later not another one...so don't know if it only shows up if you don't already have the skill learned?

Once you learn the skill, the journal won't show up again.

just looted this in ferallis. 170 skill, too low to fish. add bright baubles roughly 40% catch rate. fished debri pools found after roughly 15 crates.

I got one by fishing in STV, just fishing the nodes North of Grom'Gol.

Haven't played a whole lot since 2.3 came out. I will try fishing in Southsore and Tanaris when I get a chance.

i got mine just fishing the lake where pure water pools are found, elemental plateau area. I was fishing a pool of water, not any wreckage. It's cool, it also shows pure water nodes

I got it on my both toons, one from floating wreckage and the other from ordinary feltail school.

Took me much longer to catch Mr. Pinchy tho, but I finally got my Crawdad pet as second wish this morning :)

Oh well, still cool IMO

What does it find specifically? Treasure pools and common fish?

Last week I found this twice. The first was fishing in Skettis in a Mixed Highland School and fished up a container (script case) with it in. The second was in Feralas without a school and again fished a container (trunk) this time with it in. For my main its good as I didn't have a tracking skill before and I farm golden darters/ crawdads for cash. My guess is its something for all the non miners/ herbalists/ treasure hunters/ those with a mob/ player track ability to look at when they farm :p

Actually, I'm an herbalist and I use it a lot in Zangarmarsh when I'm farming. When I fly over the lakes I turn it on and look for pools.

And congrats on getting it on both toons. I fish every day for at least the duration of one lure and it took me until last week to get the darn thing to drop (er, float up?).
