Do "ruined leather scraps" sell at auction house?

Not well, but if you convert those to light leather via leatherworking skill, it'll sell much better.

If you are a straight skinner (without leather working), you're better off vendoring those scraps. In my experience, they don't sell well at the AH.

Yeah thats what I figured. I searched the AH and found no ruined leather at all so I just vendored it all. So whats the deal with that stuff anyway. Seems like 60% or more of the animals I skin drop ruined leather. Does it have to do with my skill level or what?

the higher level the thing you skin, the better the leather. Around the 10-20's you'll start getting mostly light and you'll keep getting better leather with higher mob levels

Keep skinning, it'll soon get very worth it. Light leather, on to medium, on to heavy then rugged. Heavy and rugged have always sold incredibly well for me. But that's not knocking light and medium, they always did well too. Don't get discouraged, it will improve.

Oh it's already completely worth it. I have made more money from light leather than any onther profession yet. I'm netting just over 1g a stack, which is pretty good for a level 7(best I'v been able to do anyway). Heck it's even the first time I'v been confident enough to buy up all the leather on AH and mark it up for a tidy profit. Its enough to allow me to shop the AH for nice, shiney, new stuff every few levels.

I'v come a long way since my miserly warrior who never bought ANYTHING(at the advice of several posts here). He's lvl 35 and I just checked his gear. Oh my my my. Still had some lvl 17 gear. Ha Ha no wonder I got frustrated with him always dying and such.

I'm too lazy to skin for light leather to boost my leatherworker toon, so I just buy them in stacks. 1G for a stack of 20, imo, is cheap considering it takes about half an hour to get a stack and a half or two.

I'm not a leatherworker. I do it solely to sell my hides.

Skinning is completely worth it, but it isn't the only thing at that level worth keeping for cash!

At lvl 7, I've always killed boars in durotar for the meat. For the character I've taken up cooking in, I kept everything to lvl up. For my alts(mostly for pvp) I always kept the meat and sold it at 1G a stack. A great way to get a cashflow going, especially when you're skinning them too!

On an aside, I also had a question. Is anyone able to sell hides at a decent profit(I have skin/herb on my char)? I've just been throwing them out and cursing whenever I get one. It sells for nothing, and isn't worth the slot to keep.

Anyone else agree?

Cured thick and rugged hides sell well. Lower level hides do not sell so well. I keep one stack of each for my leatherworking and vendor the rest of the low level hides. The cured rugged hides require refined deep rock salt to make and one can only make the refined salt every few days. Hence the cured rugged hides always sell well and the uncured rugged hides are vendor trash. Thick hides just seem to be relatively rare on my server and sell fine. The cured thick hides sell better since they require deep rock salt, which isn't too readily available, to cure.

If you're just a skinner and did not also take up leatherworking, the tricks I mention above are going to be useless to you . .. unless you make friends with a leatherworker. Cut them a deal to turn your scraps into light leather. Maybe give them a third of the light leather or cash for their service. The profitability of making cured thick and rugged hides will depend on the price of deep rock salt and refined deep rock salt on your server. Running Maraudon a few times will provide plenty of deep rock salt.

Depends on demand and supply.

If on your server most skinners vendor their scraps then its best to maintain status quo since most LWs would NOT be searching for scraps anyhow.

LWs not looking = No market = Don't waste your AH listing fee.

If however you dare to be different, since scraps are useful from 0 - 20(??) it could be worth your time and money to spend.

In either situation, I recommend using Trade channel with the amount needed to clear the LW skill levels.

Edit: By monitor the market, I mean using Auctioneer Addon which shows pretty well the market trend (if any)

So I took up leather working on a different character. Out of ten other characters, this is the only one who has been able to make better gear than what he already had. I found a use for every single pattern that came with the basic leatherworking package. Not so with blacksmithing, where the first useful thing(besides sharpening stones) came about when I was at level thirtyish, and even then it lasted one, maybe two levels. If this continues with leather working I'm gonna LOVE it.
