Can Mining and Herbalism work together?Follow

#1 Sep 19 2007 at 11:21 AM Rating: Decent
Just started a new character out, got bored with my Druid. Anyways this character I'm going to learn from past mistakes, so I'm going with two gathering professions for the start. Mining I'm sure I want as I haven't done that one, the other I was going to take Herbalism but I don't know how much of a hassle it's going to be to switch the scanners back and forth for those two. Should I just go Mining/Skinning? I liked Skinning but it made me feel like that 2 seconds it took to skin would start to add up over time and slow me down, or is that just overanalyzing?

Thanks for any input

I'm too lazy to switch the trackers myself, but I have heard of people who've done mining/herbalism successfully.

As for skinning taking up your time, you do realise that it takes time to mine the other nodes too, right? I suppose it depends on whether the value of the amount of leather you get equals/exceeds the amount you could have got from a mining node or herb in the same time.

You should also keep in mind that on some servers mining nodes are fiercely contested because there are so many miners. After all, everyone knows miners coin it :P. You'll never have that problem with skins, seeing as how you're creating the resource you exploit everytime you kill something skinnable.

Just something to keep in mind.

I use both, and with the gatherer and metamap addons, once I get near something a guildie or I have mined/picked, it shows up on the minimap, so now I generally just leave mining on since it's the better money maker on my server.

i play three accounts at once, once computer. They are a lvl 38 mage with enchanting/tailoring, a lvl 38 pally with skinning/leatherworking and a lvl 38 hunter with herbalism/mining. On the hunter i find it not a problem to switch between the two scans while running. I also use the very cool addon mentioned already called gatherer. http://gathereraddon.com/dl/ this has helped alot. I play on lightbringer alliance and there is alot of people on this server. i see more competition for the mining, but the repop fast enough it is really not an issue so far.

skinning times get faster as yougo higher. it takes longest to mine, then herbalism then skinning for my current characters. I basically gather everything I see since i have 6 professions.

If i had to pick two i would chose skinning/mining.

I know a couple of people who do both, quite well. Now they've maxed them out, they'll fly around in outlands somewhere, do a circuit of a place looking for mines, then do the same again, looking for herbs. I'm sure you could write a mod that auto swaps mining/herbs every so often so things will appear on your minimap as you're running around. I've never tried doing that, but think I just found something I need to work on tonight :)

I have max mining and max herbalism on my hunter.

Yes, they can work together. I farm both at the same time with no add-ons, nothing fancy. My personal preference is to leave my herb tracking on, because some of the more expensive plants I farm are tiny and hard to see on the ground. Also, compared to a plant, an ore node is huge and out in the open and much easier to spot. (I don't really bother swapping the two out.) I might occasionally miss a ore node here and there, but on my server herbs sell quicker on the AH versus ore.

If you farm both at the same time, you need to do these two things:
1. Make sure you have a decent graphics card in your PC. With my old graphics card I had a hard time seeing many plant nodes on the ground (especially if you have graphic settings like detail and distance turned down). With my newer card half the time I can spot the herb/ore node on screen before it even shows up on my tracking radar.

2. Train yourself to look for herbs and ores visually, don't just rely on the tracker. Often I find that mining ore nodes will spawn within a few feet of herb nodes too. (I've snatched up nodes from epic flying mounted competing players on my regular speed ground mount in Outland before because they could not see where the plant was on the ground, and they just kept flying over the same spot repeatedly because that was where their tracking showed it was).

And maxed skinning, umm yeah, good luck with that. I dropped max skinning on my toon for max herbalism, because on my server, skins don't sell for crap at the AH--I was actually making more money by just vendoring the stacks of skins than listing them! (I absolutely refuse to sell something on the AH for less than what the vendor pays for it.) Compared to skinning, my herbalism makes obscene amounts of money hand over fist.

I have both on my warlock, and a simple macro

#showtooltip
/castsequence find minerals, find herbs

I have that bound to a thumb button on my mouse, I just tap it every 10-15 seconds while I'm flying around.

Nice, I knew this was possible, I've been toggling between 2 keys.

You play three accounts at one computer...at the same time? I ask because I m a double-boxer (two accounts, two computers, played at the same time) and I'd like to compare notes, etc.
Thanks,
J
