Enchanting useless on a Main character?Follow

#1 Aug 27 2007 at 6:38 AM Rating: Decent
Hi everyone. I've posted before that I was Skinning/Herbalism at the moment but was thinking about dropping one to take Enchanting. Lvl 26 now so I would basically just be disenchanting my extra greens to try to sell stuff for some extra money. However all the posts I see about Enchanting mention alt characters, so I'm wondering shoudl I just create an alt to ship everything to and let him disenchant, am I wasting a profession slot if I take Enchanting with my main? Thanks for any advice.

I find it easier to have an alt as a disenchanter when I use my auctioneer/enchantrix combo. I have my alt character just sitting in Org, everyday he scans the AH, buys cheap greens/blues and DEs them and sells the mats. It lets you be able to keep your main in the various inns instead of always needing to go to the main cities.

I leveled Enchanting on my main, but I didn't do it specifically to D/E for profit. The good post-TBC enchants don't start becoming available until well after 300 skill and somebody's gotta be able to do it...

More importantly, if your enchanting isn't 300 you're restricting your potential product/market. I don't have the time to invest in leveling an alt such that I can get the cap lifted to 300, but I know that wouldn't be a big deal for some.

Anobix raises a very valid point, however. I'm lucky to visit an auction once or twice a week on my main since I hit Outland. In my case, it didn't really bother me because I stopped D/Eing for profit around the same time, but if that's your bread and butter you need regular trips to the auction to make good on your potential.

Once you make a home in Shattrath, porting to a major city in the old world becomes easy. I don't see a problem in reaching an AH.

While I agree to this, while leveling I preferred to keep my inn set at the places that I was leveling to increase the speed and then send anything that I could do my bank alts for them to sell.

I never said it was a problem...I just don't do it.

I think it depends on what you want to do with enchanting. If you want to actually be able to do the high end enchants that drop in instances and are earned through rep, then obviously you should take it on a character you plan on leveling to 70.

If all you want to do is use enchanting to disenchant greens and sell the mats then you may as well use an alt to do it.

I actually have enchanting on my main, and on a level 30 alt. I will probably level the alt to 35 and raise her cap so I am able to disenchant BC greens on her as well, and do all my buying and selling on that one character.

On my mage's server, he is my main, and my enchanter. I prefer having him as my main -- I'll be able to disenchant quest rewards and instance drops as I go (BOP items), instead of vendoring them for a few gold. Sometimes you win some trash cloth blue piece in an instance, nobody wanted it. Maybe they were gloves, or bracers, with bad stats. They might vendor for 2.3 gold, but you can disenchant them to a large prismatic and sell it for 15g.

Also the oppurtunity to get BOP formulas at high levels, rep reward formulas, and of course as a mage its perfect since I can port everywhere. I swear mages make the best enchanters for that reason of porting.

On my warlock, shatt is home out of general convenience. On my mage, I can make my home somewhere else while I quest there (Netherstorm for example), port directly to Org to scan the AH, port back to shatt, all for a few silver. I can sell 1 port for 2g, that basically covers my own personal ports for the next 15 or so..

Actually all you need is a mailbox. Buy all you need from AH with a bank alt, send to main, DE, send back to bank alt, put mats on AH. Ok you lose 60 copper per item :P

That's true, and with the instantaneous mail now that shouldn't be a problem.

Just consider that you need to be at least level 35 to disenchant level 70 items. Once the level cap is raised to 80, you will probably need to be higher. I'm already not looking forward to needing to level my lvl 42 alt just to be able to disenchant more.

First off, My Main is my Enchanter. Always has been.

There is the other side of Enchanting that doesn't seem to get much consideration. That Side is....Enchanting.

Not everyone who takes the Enchanting Skill is chasing down the Almighty Gold piece. I actually enjoy tracking down and acquiring the hard to find Drop formula's. I also enjoy keeping my Friends and guild mates gear Enchanted to help give them that edge.

So, while it may not be as profitable to have this skill on your main it is by no means useless.

My main is an enchanter; he wasn't always my main but he's had enchanting since level 5. Recently I've been wising up and sending BOE upgrades to my druid for an enchant before it gets equipped. From my limited experience in Outland, it might be easier to just hit up an enchanter for a particular enchant (with mats in hand... it goes a long way scoring brownie points) seeing as most of the good stuff is bop.

Especially since you'll need to lvl your alt to 50 to do so... :D
