Best Profit Trade Combo??Follow

#1 Aug 15 2007 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
After searching through several threads about this, I couldnt come to an awnser. Currently I have 300 Alchy and 300 Herb. Problem is I never use alchy. Now im debating to dropping these for profit trades. Was thinking of Enchanting for DE since mats sell good. and possibly Skinning since there is abundance of leather all over the world and it sells rather well.
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks.

I pick up skinning and enchanting on every character while leveling from now on. Skinning because you kill so many things while questing anyway that it is a guaranteed money maker and no need to get off track and gather herbs or mining nodes. Enchanting for disenchanting as you already noted.

Mining + Jewelcrafting.

Mining is the gathering profession with the highest demand because it has the most number of crafting professions that use its raw materials; Jewelcrafting, Engineering, and Blacksmithing. Moreover, mining nodes also give the most "side" drops as well. When mining high level ore in Outland you also get motes of earth and fire, green gems, and blue gems.

Jewelcrafting has very lucrative profit margins. However the upfront cost is significant. Getting to 350 skill is not too bad if you are leveling up mining at the same time. This is what I did so most of the ore I supplied myself with. However, there are still places where it was just easier/necessary to purchase the materials off the Auction House. I estimate that it cost me about 200 gold to get to JC 350. That doesn't seem like much but keep in mind that I supplied all of my own ore from mining.

Now once you get to 350 JC though, here's where the upfront costs come in. All the blue/rare designs are random world drops that sell anywhere between 300g to 800+g depending on your server. If you can front that gold though, you will over time make up for the cost and continue to profit (for the time being and probably for another 6 months at least I would estimate. Factors will come into play eventually like Black Temple / Hyjal epic gems and designs as well as Wrath of the Lich King expansion).

As an example, I recently purchased the design for Bold Living Ruby for 450g. Bold Living Ruby sells for about 45g to 50g. The raw gem, Living Ruby costs anywhere from 35g to 45g. Now, if I bought the raw material, at worst I would break even but still be skilling up my Jewelcrafting. At best, I could turn a 15g profit easily.

It gets even better because Jewelcrafters can prospect ore for gems. As an example, just yesterday at lunch I went online and checked the Auction House. I saw 3 stacks of Adamantite Ore for 20g each. I bought all 3 stacks (60 ore) and prospected it all. I ended up with a Living Ruby, a Nightseye, and a handful of green gems. The Living Ruby I cut into a Bold Living Ruby and it sold for 44g. I currently do not have a design that uses Nightseye so I sold the raw gem for 30g. The green gems I either cut or vendored (some of them won't sell and aren't worth putting on the AH so vendor them for 25s each. Others like Solid Azure Moonstone and Bold Blood Garnet will sell for around 1g each.) So in the end, I made close to 80g out of a 60g investment. Again, an easy 20g for little to no time and it's only limited by how much ore is on the AH and its buyout price. I do the same for Fel Iron ore as well which can also be prospected.

I can spend maybe 10 minutes at the AH and buy up all the ore that is priced fairly, prospect, then cut and resell on the AH. I am then free to spend time to go mining. I can come back when everything has sold and the AH has been restocked and repeat. The ore that I mined while I was away I can either sell (or smelt into bars then sell) if the prices are high and supply is low. Or just prospect it myself and sell the gems.

As you get more designs, your potential for profit will continue to grow. I honestly do not think any combination of professions can out do Mining + Jewelcrafting right now.

Honestly, so far on my first character I've got 380g from a combination of mining and skinning (and doing solo low level instance runs and overpricing the best drops which the twinks eat up). It's worked out well for me so far though the claim in the post above me about mining/jewelcrafting could very well blow mine out of the water. I'm sure it does. But mining/skinning has treated me well up to this point.

On my next character I plan to pair skinning with herbalism, as I hear gathering herbs is even more profitable than mining (and I see herbalism nodes far more frequently than I do mining nodes).
