Jewelcrafting: Am I doomed to be broke?Follow

I took Jewelcrafting up for one reason: The Guild. Basically I want to get it high enough to cut gems for sockets. My question, however, is this:

I do not have a high level character to farm gold in the Outlands with, so my lowly 31 Shaman has to make my money for me. And he's the one with JC. While leveling Jewelcrafting I don't mind selling stacks of metal I no longer need (like copper, tin, et al) since I am also a miner, so I can make *some* gold. My question is really: Does there come a point, so in the high 300 range, when JC becomes profitable?

My main has 375 JC, and it's pretty much a money sink right now.

However, there is some money to be made as soon as you can craft rare sockets (350, it was?).
I don't spend all my money on recipes, I just got one or two cuts for every gem at the moment. I get some money by selling the occasional green metal, and some by those rare gems I cut and then sell, picking up recipes along the way (for about one third of my money). I also keep some for the time I might need them.
It's not a large profit, but seeing how I prefer mining over farming primals quite often, it keeps coming slow and steady through that.

Yes,it can be extremely profitable;however the qualifiers to that are buzz-killers for most JC's without deep-pocketed alts who also mine. But,it is possible, provided you work very hard mining, and you acquire some of the steady earning cuts, which realistically will be bought in the AH.
In your case,at your level,my hope is your guild will reward your apparently selfless reasons for choosing the profession and shower you with recipes which you will "grow" into. If you have not consulted a leveling guide,I suggest this one within this site: http://wow.crafterstome.com/home.html

Good luck,don't be discouraged :)

My guild is 'young' in that they're all under 31, so being showered isn't really gonna happen. However I do have a friend in the Guild with a 60+ alt that is thinking of powerleveling my JC up so I can cut gems for his socketed gear. I will use that link provided to let him know what I need. :D

Thanks for the help and advice!

You wont be able to level past 300 until you're level 50...

Treat jewelcrafting as a gathering profession: prospect ore and sell the gems, instead of crafting.

Without a higher level toon to provide support any craft can be a money sink. You can skate by while leveling as a crafter but you will be poor most of the time. Since your stated goal is to cut gems for your guildmates then even your high end stuff won't see much profit ( unless you charge premium prices to guildmates) The best advice I can give for a toon without a main for support would be to drop JC (for now if the skill is low)and take up herbalism. Keep leveling both gathering skills, sell what you gather (and save the money-that part is important) and build your bankroll. When you are high level with a lot of excess cash, drop herbalism, take up JC, gather all your mats and powerlevel it. You gain nothing by having JC now because the good stuff requires you to be higher level anyway. What you will gain this way is plenty of money for training and mounts.
