So like the title says I'm thinking of taking up Mining and Herbalism on my new character, mostly because I can't stand to have skinning on yet another character.I always hear about how it's a bad choice to take both "tracking" professions since you can't track both herbs and mines at the same time.

So I'm curious,is there any Herbalists+Miners that can share their experience with using both of these together and some tips as well, such as which tracking should be used more often if any.(aka which is easier to spot-herbs or mines,in your opinion.)

It seems to me it would just require a little more observation of my surroundings as apposed to staring at the mini map all the time.

Appreciated in advance.

I have both mining and herbalism on my hunter and I love the combo, especially at level 70. I used to have skinning, but I don't want to take time out just to go kill beasts to skin.

Once you get a feel for each zone you are in you will know which tracking to have on. For example in Terokkar I keep mining on more often around the edges and find herbs on more in the forested areas. You just need to switch back and forth between the two often to catch everything.

Not only is it conceivable, its a real money-maker. My shaman alt has both of these and I usually do what Khalane does. When I am in an area where it is not so well defined, such as Bloodmyst Isle for instance, I keep the herb tracker on and try to inspect the mountainous areas as I pass. It seems easier to see nodes than herbs, but it only takes a second to switch back and forth between trackers.

All in all, I think the results are too valuable to override the inconvenience of switching trackers or more closely inspecting the terrain.

I had like 2500g when I hit 70 with this combo. Herbalism is so darn easy to level, who cares if you skip some. Track mines most of the time, pick herbs when you see them. Once in a while doing a power herbalism run (once you have a mount), and you'll be ahead of the game.

Once you're almost 70, with 375 herbalism and 375 mining, the gold is ridiculous.

Also track mines around cliffs/mountains, herbs in foresty areas. Switch them every once in a while. I used to have a macro, but I forget it now.

I think it was just:

yeah, on my new warlock alt I am definitely picking up both of them to try out that macro, any extra money sure can't hurt!

If you do that... make sure you run gatherer (http://norgs.internutter.org/gatherer.htm). It tracks all the locations where you've previously mined, herbed, and found chests(and what type of each was there)

Once you get used to a gathering skill, you barely need the mini map any more, I often spot herbs way before I think about looking at my minimap. The yellow dots are only really useful when a) you want to spend time only gathering and b) when travelling (especially with epic flight form, things go a bit too fast :)

This being said, if you want a money-making combo I'd still combine one of the 2 with another gathering skill that doesn't require the mini-map (namely skinning and enchanting). You can certainly make tons of money with a combo of (mining or herba) + (enchanting or skinning) and you won't have problems with your mini-map.

I've always wondered why Blizz just does't let you track both, it shouldn't have a huge impact on anything. And any class that has track humanoids, beasts, demons etc etc should be able to track both a mob and a node IMHO of course.

I suggest getting the gatherer mod, like a previous poster noted. If you focus on one type of resource through one circuit, then focus on another resource through the next circuit, alternating every time, your minimap will fill with the spawn locations of all of the resource nodes in that area.
