What is the verdict on Engineering now?Follow

#1 Jul 23 2007 at 3:14 PM Rating: Default
Is it just me or does Engineering really suck now after the BC expansion?

The bullets you can make are not even as good as the ones that you can buy from a vendor. You can't sell any of the wares to a non-engineer. The guns you can make suck compared to instance/PvP/AH gear. So basically I have levelled this skill to make scopes which are about the only useful thing you can make and sell?

Can any max engineers please enlighten me as to why I should not just drop this stupid profession for another gathering skill? I am currently 315/375 skill, and looking at the cost it would take me to get to 375, I'm not even sure it is worth it. Granted, my main is a hunter and the scopes and guns are useful, but not enough to offset the sale of ore after BC came out and everyone went jewelcrafter happy.

The Epic helms are quite nice.

That is about it.

My theory is that engineering is kept around as the whipping boy for the other professions. "Yeah leather-working stinks, but at least is better than engineering"

Having 300+ engineering has been incredibly useful in the 50-60 battlegrounds. Level 70-75 dragonlings/chickens are great for spotting stealthed characters. The nigh-invulnerablity belt is a powerful defensive item that rarely backfires. The poultryizer gives massive stamina, and can be used as a spell interrupt in desperate circumstances. Power Amplification Goggles and Cogspinner Goggles outclass any other armor wearable at that level, unless you have powerful friends willing to help your low-level toon get a Primal Nether, in which case you can craft insanely powerful epic goggles and be the only player in the battleground with a metagem.

You can make best bullets. (I know, I know, the Scale of the Sands bullets are better - but how many ppl can go Hyjal Summit to get reputation?)
You can make best ranged weapon still before entering Karazhan
The other pros are one post above
But it is not so easy to make money with this proffesion.

I'm not an engineer but a good friend of mine (hunter) is, and he has a few nice tricks, like the rez trinket (combined with FD it can be nice) or the charges to open locked chests in instances - there's not always a rogue around and the loot from those is usually very very good. Ok, that might not justify levelling all the way to 375 over another prof, but if you like the prof itself then it had its uses. It's not a money-making profession for sure.

Oh yeah, Goblin Jumper Cables. My engineer is a priest, so not really helpful to me, but any self-respecting Rogue or Hunter should have one as wipe protection.

Yea, this is what I was thinking when I switched. I don't know about GJC-XL yet, but the regular ones only work about 10% of the time for me. Is this normal or am I an anomaly?

The way I am working my engineering skill on my warrior is to use one of my alts to disenchant surplus items that I craft for leveling purposes. A perfect example of this is the Flying Tiger goggles. They are easy to make, gave me good skill points and disenchant into 3-5 strange dust. I couldn't sell them because of the engineering requirement, but the strange dust sells well and for more than a vendor will give for the goggles.

Another easy one to make money on is the deadly blunderbuss. Doesn't require too much in the way of mats and they sell extremely well on my server for 3g each due to people needing them for a quest in ashenvale that rewards most people with their first piece of rare armor.

edit: for those that are curious, I wasn't paying attention and posted on my co-worker's SWG account logon.

my 70 warrior is an engineer and this is why i still have it

1) best bullets pre hyjal
2) explosives + pvp / aoe situations (kara, etc) are amazing for added dps and the stun win in pvp
3) best helm(s) in the game unless you're clearing your way through TK / SSC
4) best tanking gun in the game / one of the best ranged weapons pre-kara
5) rocket boots + bg/arenas = LOL amazing.
6) jumper cables XL (work very often for me)

as a warrior i don't use the jumper cables too often, but there has been many times where i was the last one alive with a hunter / rogue to burn down a mob / boss / etc in heroics while i was on shield wall / last stand. afterwards, rez a rezzer, and you're good to go.

this profession doesn't make much money, but once you get things like the adamantite bullets and the different scopes, you can really rack up the gold if advertised right.

Not sure about in endgame, but I think they're way stupid at the lower levels (large copper BomB). They just don't do enough damage to a mob and the cooldown is too great before being able to use another.

I like the dummys, they've been effective for me trying to get a bad multiple pull off me, giving me time and distance to prepare to take them out. Not sure if the are as effect later. Anyone else?

I use it in pvp just about always, it's especially great on healers since it stuns them, not allowing them to get the heal off in arenas!

Engineering is basicaly the PvP tree when you come down to it. Goblin Rocket Helm/Boots are great to have, the stunning from the bombs, and many other toys make this very useful to have.

as a rogue with ZERO AoE the bombs leveling up were a godsend, as long as you kept your engineering skill up and a fair amount of bombs in your inventory... the stun getting those mobs not in your focus casting a spell, stunning them for a few seconds-all that i needed to take out my mob and move onto the next

Scopes are the only really marketable item that I've seen, of course the Jumpers and those crafty helms are neat too.. It has it's benefits, mostly in application of bombs and other doo-dads which I think are alot more entertaining than alot of the other trades.

Mostly I am wondering when they will add the Epic Rocket Pack for engineers to use as an alternative to Flying Mounts Smiley: lol
