I'm wondering what will be better at 1. making money and 2. be good for a troll mage.

Thanks

Money:
When I was making this decision, I went with the fact that elixirs can't be pickpocketed or looted from mobs. Also, the prices of nightmare vine on my server are butal.

However, the market for pots is probably higher than elixirs, if you figure that 8 of 10 classes use mana, and all 10 need healing pots from time to time. When it comes to elixirs, the market gets more narrowed as some classes don't care about attack power, agility, spell damage, +healing, etc. Also, those elixirs last for an hour, while a pot can be used every 3 minutes.

Practicality for a mage:
A raiding mage would probably use a great deal of mana pots, and those mats are very easy to find. If you are crafting a bunch for yourself, you might want to go this route.

The sad fact is, you can probably make more money selling the mats. I'm happy to break even on my server, because I figure crafting can yield discoveries, and as a raider who goes thru 4 flasks of relentless assault per week, I wouldn't mind the extra convenience of making them myself.

Umm, health/mana pots can be used every 2 minutes, not 3.

I completely agree with you there. While you have a small chance of making a 'flask of supreme power' x5 or whatever, you will most likely be fine just making them one by one and selling them (assuming you farm the mats), then to just hope for more discoveries and sales on pots.

I assume you have herbalism as second profession. I dropped it for tailoring and buying herbs for those few potions I use out of AH.
I went transmutes, primals can be farmed by anyone and diamonds and such still sell. Might not be big money but its steady little income.

what a pedantic response to a very well constructed and thought-out post.

^you cant rate down haha.
*ponders what pedantic means...

Anyways, I am facing the same decision. I guess youll just have to go with what is selling on your server. I know weekly I buy a 20 stack of major agility elixirs. Alot of guilds require you to use elixir's, flasks what ever so thats why I am going elixir.

You're an alchemist and you're buying elixirs? That seems...wrong somehow. Hmm.
Back on topic: I don't think I truly understand what choosing a mastery means overall. If I become a potions master, occasionally I will make a stack of pots while only attempting to make one? Is that all? If that is indeed the case, I'll be choosing elixir mastery because the "Flask" recipes use much more expensive mats and being able to occasionally proc a stack will make you more money. Or am I still missing something?

The only other thing to consider is what you make the most of. Since I make 50 times more potions than elixirs, I get multiple potions often (with potion mastry). If I was elixir mastry with the same percentage proc rate, I would probably be waiting until next Christmas to see it go off.

True. I've gone Potion Master as well. Because you probably produce more mana/healing potions the mastery-effect procs more frequently. This means in the long run you will get more out of Potions. Quantity beats quality this thime!

I went elixir mastery and haven't regretted it for one moment. It's very seldom I don't get at least a x2 proc when making 5 elixirs and I've discovered 5 or 6 new (mainly flask) recipes so far.

As a mage, it's likely you'll be using more elixirs at end game than pots. Sure, you'll use mana pots, but chances are you'll get through more elixirs because of the dying aspect. Note I'm not talking flasks here 'cause obviously they last through death. Elixirs also greatly help stats/performance; potions don't.

As an actively raiding pally, I don't even carry health pots on me. It's bandage, heal myself, hope someone else heals me, or die. The cooldown between pots is harsh at times and I find health pots just not worth it for me because you can bet your bottom dollar you'll need to take a mana pot... but oops, still on cooldown from that health pot you popped earlier.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I find I use more elixirs more frequently than potions per se; to that end, it saves me money because a) I don't have to buy them from the AH and b) I proc frequently, which is a great bonus. Add to that, you can strike groovy deals with guildies (I currently swap major shadow power for mana oil with one of mine).

Hope that helps.

My mage uses a LOT more elixirs than pots. On a boss I use between 0-3 pots. When you wipe its generally before you even use the 1st potion. Whereas after each wipe you gotta renew your elixirs (that being an adept + draenic).

So 'd say if you guild is still in its learning stages, go elixirs.

Personaly I prefer transmute mastery.

Farming up for a Might a day isnt so hard, plus when it procs BIG time you can make like 500g on my server.

But then its really what you prefer and end up making most.
