Do you get any skill points when you prospect ores? I just hit 125 JC and can now prospect iron. But before I "waste" my ore on prospecting, I was wondering if it gives any skill-ups for JC.

You dont get skill points for prospecting but the reason u prospect is to get mats so that u can use them to lvl ur skills. So yes in a way it seems like a waste to prospect 5 ore to get one or more gems. But it will lvl ur JCing so u need to do it.
go to wowhead, look at the prospecting results for each type of ore.
Compare prices on your server for ore/bars/propecting.
Make money, use money to buy bars or more ore to level JC.
