Drop Enchanting??Follow

#1 Jun 12 2007 at 8:04 AM Rating: Decent
I know, this type of question is everywhere but... I am currently a level 322 Enchanter. On my server the materials cost more than people are willing to pay for the enchant. Easy fix I thought, I started telling people to bring thier own mats, so far no dice... I can honestly say that every skill up I have had has came out of my own pocket.

That being said would it be more profitable to drop enchanting and take up alchemy or another profitable non-gathering profession?

BTW, I have Crusader, +agility 1 handed, fiery, icy, lifestealing, etc.. And still have only done a few fiery's for friends well after it went green.

Thanks for any help.

If you picked enchanting as a money-making profession then you were in the wrong business (if you plan on selling the enchants). The only good way to make money on enchanting is to disenchant greens/blues and sell the mats on the AH.

Yeah, I tried that for a while, camping the AH. But there are way too many people doing that on my server. Really thinking of switching to alchemy, that way I can make my own potions and whatnot.

Yep everyone wants to find that enchanter that will do something for free, especially if they have to provide the mats. So even offering to do some thing won’t gain you much in tips, it seems.

I found that I just have to suck up the loss and do the enchant because I’m eager for the skillpoints more than the gold. Plus at some point, you have so many mats for the enchant, waiting for some profitiable way to use it, that it becomes trivial to blow through 10 or 20 skill points to use up those mats to make space or go on to the next important enchant.

As for dropping it at 322…if you fear the potential loss of money getting to 375, think about the loss of money you already have getting to 322. I’d suggest to keep it. If you have to let it sit for a while to collect up mats or gold to buy mats, then let it be. Once you’re 60+ in outlands, which I assume you have because you talk about 375, then you’ll find yourself having several hundred gold which you can then redirect back to your enchanting.

I hope that your other profession is herbalism then...

And if it is, then you shouldn't have too much trouble making money if you sell the herbs at the right prices.

All the crafting professions share the same issue: either you get a skill point OR you make money. It's almost impossible to get both at the same time.

Therefore if you only want to skill up, offer enchants for free to whoever brings the mats (and even through a few cheap mats around for guildies) and you should level fast enough. Of course it works better if you have at least a few enchants that ppl are going to look for, e.g. +12 agi on cloak, +6 all stats on chest, etc. And you have crusader, so that's a good start, I see lvl 70 melee chars with crusader still.

If you want the money, try to farm enchanting recipes (I think BEM is a good place to start, just check the drop rates on this site). The high-level enchants can easily draw tips of 5-10g. And I can assure you that a lot of lvl 70 chars need enchants right now in order to tackle endgame contents. I am in a fairly casual guild and even then all my lvl 70 guildies have enchants on all their pieces of eq - where applicable of course ;)

Finally the real money is of course in the "gathering" aspect of the profession, i.e. disenchanting. You can of course play the AH, but in Outland it's even easier, you will get tons of quest rewards that you won't need, and questing/farming or even instancing generates tons of greens that can be DEed for good money. Very often greens that would vendor for ~2g will give 3-5 Arcane Dusts worth 6-10g.
