I don't quite understand you. Gray = trivial i.e. you can mine it but will receive no skill ups.

Here's the progression:

Red = Beyond your ability at your current skill level. You'll need to gain skills before you can mine it.
Orange = You can mine it and will be guaranteed a skill pt.
Yellow = You can mine it and there's a good chance for a skill pt.
Green = You can mine it and there's a chance for a skill pt.
Gray = Trivial as I said.

i think your colors are mixed up? grey-level ore should be mineable by you.

if you see some ore you can't mine, it's probably red. in that case, you'll need to level up your char and/or your mining to be able to get it.

Could it be the colour on the minimap? The greyer than normal nodes on that are usually underground. You should look around for a cave entrance which should lead you to the node.

Yeah, underground or in a cave. When you enter the cave system, then the dots change to bright yellow.

Ah, sorry, i guess I should have specified that. Yes I meant on the minimap. BUT! i have now gained some important color information I didnt previosly know.

So the grey mining points (on the minimap) are underground as in....in a cave...is that right?

Just to add to this, there are places where the colour on the mini map ins't totally reliable, I have found many where mining nodes show up bright yellow on the mini map but are actually underground. A good example is if you're standing in the hills above the Deadmines.

Just to save you the frustration I had at first trying to find nodes above ground just because they showed up bright yellow! :)
