I just learned the prof, and DE'ed every thing I could find drop wise. Once I had a little bit of money I would bid the low priced greens in the AH and DE the ones I won, went fairly quickly. Hardest part was getting to the trainer in Uldaman at 225 skill, and yes thats even avoidable now.

Regarding making money, for me I can honestly say it was not a big moneymaker (and I leveled engineering to 375 and enchanting to 367, go me) I imagine if you were patient and collected mats and sold the chants it could be profitable, but I am more of a enchanting, free with your mats kind of person.
I am now investigating mining as a new income source, /wave engineering.

Try and couple it with Tailoring. I started a new char and gave it 200G to start with. Atm i'm at 300G and tailoring and enchanting at 225. Now I need to level to 35, 33 atm, and go on towards 300 and 375.

Buy Linen cloth, or farm it, and make Brown linen robe. Make enough, 60 or 70 and you can get enchanting to 60 just by disenchanting. Then use all the strange dust to level up and you'll be up to 100 in no time. Then just keep making tailored items and use the mats to level enchanting further.

When you hit the stage where you get soul dust, vision dust and/or dream dust, you can choose to use half to level up and sell the other half on AH.

Also pick some tailoring recipes to sell on AH and allways keep some items on it, and the money will surely come.

At least on my server it does.

Try and check out the numerous guides on tailoring and enchanting and pick the route you thinks fits your style best.

Disenchanting cheap green from the AH is pretty much the only way to make money from enchanting, on most servers there are too many enchanters already.

If you're truly new and don't have any higher-level alts to send you a bit of starting cash, I'd recommend gaining a few levels and looking for groups to Deadmines. Level 18 should suffice and there's always groups looking for another body to help them out, especially if you're hanging around the area.

Once you have 1g you can start making money directly from the AH by buying the cheap greens but the free ones from Deadmines are always useful.

You can make tons of money with enchanting, assuming you disenchant. There are always lots of low level greens that can be had for a few silver. Get those and DE them. Sell the mats. Repeat. Two add-ons required for this are auctioneer and enchantrix. Enchantrix is in an alpha state, so exepct some bugs. Both of those can be found at auctioneeraddon.com. More money will allow you to progress faster, but you can start with just a few silver. You can reliably double your money (or better) if you play the market right.

it is very difficult to make any money actually doing enchants. About the only thing that I can sell is fiery. I still haven't made enough money to cover the cost of the recipe though. One strategy for making enchanting work is to buy something that DEs into the mats you need for cheap. For example, aquamarine signets DE into small radiant shards, and can usually be purchased for about 5g on my server. The shards go for 8+. Get that and the essence of fire, and you can have a 33-35g enchant for 21g in mats. Granted, you would be better off just selling the mats, but at least you can "feel" like you are making money enchanting. But as ohmikeghod will point out, enchanting is a gathering profession if you use it correctly.

One last thing, it is nice to have lots of money. My 56 mage (highest level character) has about 1700g right now with about 300g up in auctions. It is nice to be able to buy anything I want and not really worry about. The only gold I have ever "bought" has been the premium membership here to search the forums. Well worth it!
