Alchemy on the PTRFollow

#1 Apr 25 2007 at 4:55 AM Rating: Decent
I took some screenshots on the PTR of the Alchemy stuff. Thought I'd share it with you all here.

First thing! YOU CAN RESPEC (100 g cost)

New elixirs

Trainer taught
- Elixir of Draenic Wisdom (Int and Spi increased by 30, Guardian type)
- Elixir of Major Fortitude (Health increased by 250, 10 health every 5 seconds, Guardian type)
^^^ Notice here how I typed "fort" to filter my recipes.

Cenarian Expedition
- Earthen Elixir
(Prevents up to 20 dmg done per attack, Guardian type)

Halaa Quartermaster
- Elixir of Ironskin (Resilience Rating increased by 30, Guardian type)

Notice how Ragveil is used in 3 of these new elixirs ;-)

That is so sweet that we can respec. I completed my Elixer Mastery before announced changes and I am pretty sure I am going to do this and switch to transmutes.

But not after I take advantage of it and make a crapload of elixers. :)

Oh and FYI to all reading this. If you are currently trying to "discover" the new flasks, STOP. There was a bug that let people discover them just by drinking pots so Blizz put in a hotfix and from now on until the next patch(hopefully) we can't discover anything. So save your mats

Where's your source on that? A guildmate discovered a flask just this past weekend.

I chose the Elixir quest before the patch and have not completed it. I decided to go transmute and after abandoning the quest I went to pay my 100g to "unspec" but it does not give me the option. The trainer only offers for me to get the same elixir quest again.

So, my question is, Do I have to complete the elixir quest in order to change to transmute?

Please advise anyone. Thank you in advance.

I think you get the specialization once you complete the quest, not when you select it. Therefore from what you describe I don't think you need to "unspec". Just go to the guy with the transmute mastery quest (in the Stormspire in Netherstorm) and he should have the quest for transmute mastery available for you.

Not true. I was waiting for a group to arrive at the Hellfire summon stone yesterday, and to avoid getting ganked, I ran into Ramps, and while I waited, I decided to make some healing pots (grey to me). While I was doing it, I discovered the Flask of Shadow Fortification. That's two discoveries for me now. :)

There was a hotfix that disabled discoveries. But upon release of Patch 2.1, discoveries are live again.

Please note the date on the posts in this thread.

Can any high-level alchemist get discoveries? Is there a level requirement? Do you have to be a "specialist" in order for discoveries to proc?

The only requirement that I know of for discoveries is that you have to use Outland mats. It can proc from anything produced by alchemy (potion, flask, elixir, transmute...), it's purely random.

You don't need to have a specific character level or alchemy skill level, you don't need to be a master and the recipe can be grey for you, as long as it uses Outland mats you have a chance.

Currently the assumed chance is 1-in-200, i.e. 0.5%, but I don't think it's confirmed - and yes, it's very low anyway. My personal discovery rate was higher. It indeed took me 300 tries or so to get my first discovery (keeping in mind they had been disabled for a while), but on Tuesday I was doing a few elixirs (~15) and got a discovery. Yesterday I did 10 elixirs of major healing and got another one. I must have been lucky :-)

At first ppl thought there would be links between the type of stuff they were creating and the type of discovery they would get, but the early evidence shows it doesn't seem to be the case. I've discovered potions off elixirs and flasks off potions, etc.

Ok, what about recipes that use some Outland and some old world herbs?

I'm asking these questions because I was bummed to hear that you have to be level 68 to specialize in Alchemy (or so I am told). By the time I hit 58, my alch will be maxed. My herbalism is maxed now, thanks to my high-level friends escorting me through Terrokar on a flower-picking binge. Smiley: flowers

Just a note for all: I placed a link in the Trade Skills FAQ under Alchemy to an FAQ on BC Alchemy.

But to address one question in particular:

If it uses ANY Outland herb (Felweed usually), or in other words, if you learned it in the Outlands, it is capable of proc'ing a discovery.

They qualify. If it uses ANY mat from Outland, it qualifies.

Don't forget the quest. It was a bigger limitation for me than reaching lvl 68, for sure.

Either you have a lot of high lvl friends who are going to send you A LOT of high level mats or... you have a lot of money to spend on mats at AH or... good luck.

BTW of the trainable recipes all are grey at lvl 370 except transmutes. So it's either luck with transmutes (at one per day it can take a while) or you need at least one discovery. Unless you don't lvl this char at all, my guess is that you'll ding 58 first :)

(from a lvl 70 druid with 390 herba and... 374 alchemy :)

Anathor - How do you get passed 375 on Herbalism? I'm maxed at 375 now.

As I said previously, my high-level friends take me out on herb-picking excursions in the lower-level areas in Outland. Basically the places I can survive a few hits. LOL

It actually becomes beneficial for them too because I pick a ton of motes along with the herbs.

Oh, ok. I thought there may have been another level to train. Cool. I have the enchanted gloves already.

I wanted to play a tauren, but I couldn't take all the bull sh*t. Smiley: lol
