Mining vs Skinning (or others)Follow

#1 Apr 21 2007 at 1:40 PM Rating: Decent
Im new to the game, lvl 23 combat, 130+ mining 150+ blacksmith

im curious, since so many of the animals seem skinnable, and its a bit tought finding as many veins as i would like (tin, silver) and others

would it be better to go skinning/blacksmith, and use AH to sell the skins, then use the gold to buy what you need??

thoughts?

I was mining/skinning until level 53. Tons of money. Had my mount paid for at level 33. I've had my epic mount money since level 52. Do both, blacksmithing will only cost you money.
Or, do what I did, I got so bored with the lack of nodes that could up my mining skills that I switched to herbing at lvl 53. Should've done it long ago. Herbs are crazy money, at least on my server. I've yet to have a stack bounce back to me from AH. From the lowest level herbs to dreamfoil, you will move that stuff fast.

do you think its worth it for me to switch to herbs?? and buy the ore?

No, if you're set on blacksmithing, stick with mining. There's always a new crop of jewelcrafters that will buy your ore. Free tip: smelt the stuff you need for BS and sell the rest as ore. At least on my server, ore is worth more than bars.

I concur. I've been mining (259) and skinning (300) since day 1 until now (lvl 51).

This prof combo has been a good way for me to make the most money as there's always plenty of mobs to kill/skin and you can always skin the kills from other players (assuming they arent skinners themselves of ocurse).

I've lvl'd mining farily easily, plenty of Mithril on Tanaris and Badlands, have recently discovered lots of thorium in Un'Goro and Silithus. Prices for bars are cheaper than that of ore on my server so I never smelt anything these days.

If I were to compare the two profs I have I'd say mining gets me more money. This means dropping mining for skinning if you're going to stick with BS is a bad move IMO. Do what Lathby suggested.

for me I just cant seem to give up my Skinning prof. I like being able to get more loot from everyones kills! Its just free money!

The difference being that with an ore node, you're guaranteed at least two pieces of ore, up to four for a single or eight for a double vein. With beasts, you often (always?) only get 1 piece of leather/hide.

Definitely not. As has been said before, mine every node you see, then keep what you need for BS and sell the rest.

Check the AH before you smelt everything. Sometimes the raw material sells for more per Piece than the smelted stuff. (Remember, smelted pieces are made up of multiple raw pieces.)
