Hello everybody

I have a lvl 39 – 40 pally, ½ bar from 40. Now I have my BS to lvl 205 now, and my mining has just reached 175, I think (So I can mine Mithril Nodes)

Anyway, I have found that it is a huge pain to lvl BS, and I don’t know if it is going to be worth it as, I have barely made my $$ back on anything I can make to lvl up my skill, and I haven’t been able make anything useful for my Pally.

And if I do continue BS, im not sure what I should go into Armor, or Weapons, it just seems that there are to many choices.

Any and all opinions are great

Never ever pick up a crafting profession for money. You make more by just gathering. The reason why people pick up a craft is for the BoP that only the crafter can use. I don't know what spec you are, but blacksmithing currently gives some of the best weapons in the game. For example, I really want that Lunar Crescent. (It's a slow 2H axe that has amazing damage, very good for arms warriors). But I picked enchanting and herbalism, and I'm not going to drop enchanting now that I'm level 320 with it. Browse the list of stuff you can make on this site and see if you like any of them. This will help you choose your blacksmith specialty too. (By the way, you can pay 100g to respec, iirc).

If you are short on gold, just stop levelling blacksmithing and go for a few mining runs. That'll get you some gold quickly.

I used to count blacksmithing as one of my professions. However I always let it lag behind my level because of the length of time it took to gather the ores necessary to craft anything and because there was nothing worth making. I think the only stuff worth crafting are the end-game weapons and armor, unless you can find a niche in the market on your server, for something people will use.

I did find a small niche - iron buckles. Made a few silver a week on them because it seemed like there was just one person willing to buy from the AH.

Now I've traded it in for jewelcrafting - something else that will use the mining skill and gems I've stored up.

i'm a lvl 70 pally, and a 370 BS. I'd recommend that you think ahead as to what kind of pally you want to be. keep in mind, a pally has NEVER been thought of as a DPS character, so some of those nifty weapons might not be usefull to a pally. We have ALWAYS been thought of as the survivable one. So ya might look towards armorsmithing.

I have been wondering the same thing about blacksmithing. I am up to lvl 18 with a 102 in blacksmithing. To make a single combine it takes nearly a gold worth of supplies and the stuff I can make can't sell for 20 silver in AH. I mean come on bronze boots require TIN and COPPER and they have terrible stats! There are better items dropping off trash mobs then the stuff I can make ATM.

It is not really costing me money, however I could have probably made about 20 gold in the AH with the Tin and Copper I have consumed. Seems to me Blizzard should either make nodes easier to find, or reduce the amount needed per combine. I don't expect to make the greatest armor in the world at my current skill, but for the supplies and time required it should be alot better.

Just Like everything else in life and in video games, you have to put in time and effort to reap the reward. Yes blasmithing cost you money at first and yes it is hard to lvl up. However i can make all the difference if you invest in it. I have a lvl 42 Pally with 255 blacksmithing. I recently learned how to make the "Phantom Blade". I costs me about 10g in materials, which may seem to be alot to some of you, but i then turned around and sold it for 75g in one day. So if you ask me i have already made what i have spent in one item. I make about 25 to 50g every two weeks from selling blue items i can craft. The drop rate on blue item world drops are not very high, but i can craft these Black Smithing items anytime i want and sell them for GOLD.

Even with something like First Aid, you can raise it better, faster, when you’re a higher level.

Same with mining. The 30 minutes you spent going around the teen-level zones to get 1 stack of tin and copper ore when you’re level 18, can be done much more easily at level 40 with a mount. Move faster, kill faster, more ore in 30 minutes.

Granted, it’s nice to work up the skill to match the gear you can wear but this is what you would face if you did that. Also you need to know about zones where good numbers or routes exist for ore. Just because you can find that ore in a certain zone, doesn’t mean it’s the best place to get it.

Since you also mention that BS isn’t giving you better gear than you can find or buy (now and then), consider to keep the mining skill up to match the zone but wait on BS. It’s a worthy skill and can be done later also without any penalty to you.

I briefly thought about using my hunter to do BS, but the idea of not really being able to use the BOP recipes makes me think I’d rather work it up on a plate-wearer, even if there are BOEs that can be made. If you think like that too, then without having to create another warrior or pally (who may not prefer that gear over +INT plate gear or weapons), you should keep him on BS.

Well... Im a level 43 pally atm, and I have 271 enchanting and 261 BS.

Ive got a just under 200g and enough mats to make most of my AH inventory already in the bank. I would have more, but Im a sucker for blue items, and I like to wear the best stuff I can get.

There are a few items in most of the skill up ranges that can be sold at a profit. When I say profit, that means higher than the cost of the mats if bought off the AH.

The key is to figure out what sells, make 2 or 3 of them and throw them up on the AH... And replace them every day as they sell, even if they wont give you a skill up.

My current inventory is pretty simple:

1 ironforge breastplate
2 silvered bronze shoulders
2 pearl handed daggers
2 deadly bronze poiniards
1 green iron helm
1 shining silver breastplate (depending on mats availability)
1 green iron hauberk

I usually sell my entire stock every day. I make about 1g per item except the 2 blue chest pieces, which clear me 8g per on average. Thats pure profit.

Depending on your server population and number of competitors you might have to sell more at a lower profit margin, or you might be able to sell less for more, it just depends on your servers economy.

I'd love to know where you pick up the mats for Phantom Blade for 10g :)
I've sold around 3 so far, each for the 50-60g mark, and generally I spent around 20+ gold for the mats (not including the mithril and gems which I mine myself). I know prices differ between servers, but the mats for Phantom Blade always seem to be waaaaay to expensive.

As for the question at hand - stick with black smithing, it will pay dividends in the long run, but it is a long hard slog to lvl it. As a warrior, the BoP weapons that I can make at the mo (lvl 49, BS 266) are just as good, if not better, than most of the blue drops you come across. Might not make huge money until later in the game, but it keeps you equipped for best part of it.

Mining is great for money - if the BS is boring the hell out of you, just farm some ore and sell it. Easy money when you really need it.
