I am starting to level my fishing skill, but its only at level 10. What fish should I specifically fish for to make a profit? I am not that familiar with fishing and just need someone to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

For making money, get your fishing to 50 (in the pool by the fishing trainer) then head to the Barrens to fish deviate fish, a stack sells for 2 - 10 gold depending on the server.

Somewhere in the posts there is a really GOOD post of fishing hints. You can start at the pool by the fishing trainer or even buy a bauble from the vendor right there. Then go to the Oasis and start fishing. Only problem with Deviate fish - sometimes they wont sell unless you have the recipe to cook them. Which unfortunetly at the AH is real expensive(depending on your g stock)- 4g-10g. Once cooked they become Savory Deviate Delight.
Then you can move up the list from there - Firefins Snapper, Oily Blackmouths, and the big ones Stonescale eels. Which are hard to get unless you are lvl 40 or higher.
But the plus of fishing is you can cook just about every fish you catch and when cooked will give you even more health regeneration. SO you are lvling 2 2nd profs at once.

Of course depending on your server - mine - firefins - 5-10 = 1g-2g stack.
Oilys are about the same. I usually stack 5 and sell for 1g. Just depends on the week.

Okay...Great! Exact answer I was looking for. I tend to try and get the most I can out of a game when I play it so buying the recipe for Deviate Fish is right up my alley. I can't wait to get home and skill up to 50.

I wouldn't recommend going after deviate fish in the Barrens Oases to a level 10 character. In order to maximize the number of deviate fish caught, you need to fish the pools of Deviate dish as much as possible, and that means running into thos L16 turtles that lurk around the edges of the lakes. However, after you are confident that you can take on one of those turtles and survive, fishing there becomes pretty trivial. Every time I've gotten the Savory Deviate Delight recipe, it has been as a drop from those turtles, too. On my server, uncooked deviate fish sell for about 2G/stack, Cooked, they double in price.

For starting-level Alliance toons, I recommend getting to Menethil Harbor to up your fishing skill beyond 100. It's trivial for a Night Elf or Draenei to get there - just take the boat from Auberdine. For Humans, Dwarves, and gnomes, a low-level run from Ironforge to Menethil Harbor will be needed. Put your clothes in your backpack and don't worry about dying - the graveyards will usually move you forward instead of backwards - take the angel rez if they do. Be sure to tag the flight path when you get to Menethil Harbor and you'll never have to make that run again. From the harbor, you can catch Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth. You don't need to fish the pools to get them - just fish.

On a PvE server, there is no problem in getting to Tanaris and starting fishing for Eels at Level 25. Take along a good supply of lures to fish there with 225 skill. I know that ganking occurs along the shoreline on PvP servers, so stay aware of your surroundings if you are on a PvP server. Don't woory about getting attacked by those L42 turtles along the shore. They are all neutral and will leave you alone.

Here's a dumb question. I have fishing 139 and want to use nightcrawlers on my line for the +50 skillup. I right click on the nightcrawler and the hand turns blue and then I click on the fishing rod in my hand and nothing happens. I click on the bobber in the water and nothing. Exactly how the heck do you do this?

Are you clicking on the fishing action button or the fishing rod? AFAIK it only works if you click on the fishing rod.

You have to click on the fishing pole on your equip screen, as in press c key, then click on the fishing pole in your main hand slot.

In astranaar you find safefish, if you have the cooking recipe for them. You get a food dish that mana users love. In STV, you find greater sagefish [both recipes are in steamwheedle port].

Profits depend on the server and if you have a friend who will pay you for these lovely mana fish.

Alchemists like their firefins, blackmouths at early levels a lot and practically devour stonescales later on. [its part of the more powerful defence booster potions, theres one that increases armor by 2000 for a short while]

click on the image of the pole in your paper doll screen (where you see all your gear on you)

ie, press C (default) then apply it there.
