Just mine ores when you see them while leveling and questing and find the easiest bs 'plan' to use to get up quick (like if you can choose between 2 orange bs plans, choose the one using less valuable mats that are easier to get). At first its hard to keep your bs near your mining level and your chars level but after level 40 bs helps alot (if your mail or palte using class)

Blacksmithing is tough to make money with at low levels... on my server anyway. I can almost always make more money just selling the materials. Things that sold well for me though are: green iron helms (i think it's the lowest level helm), green iron hauberk, ironforge breastplate, shining silver breastplate, and the throwing weapons: thick bronze darts and whirling steel axes. Other stuff really never sold well for me at low levels. If you don't have an alt already to sell stuff on the AH, make one. Send all the stuff you make to your alt so it isn't wasting your pack and bank space.

Also, watch the prices on the AH on iron and steel. Many times on my server I won't make much money selling iron, but steel prices will be high. I really don't know why, but it can mean extra cash flow. I sold lots of iron and steel to buy mithril for skill ups. Of course the market on your server could be very different...

QFT.

There are also the different rods you can make(ie: silver, gold and truesilver) that might make you money. On my server, I can buy gold anywhere from 40S to 1G per bar(so I buy anything I can find at/under 50S) and I can sell the rods for 1-1.5G. Also great for leveling at those levels is to make grinding stones as soon as you can, and making sharpening/weightstones which you can use for leveling and are super cheap to make. Also, the lowest level green shoulders you get can make you some cash.

I would have to say that this...

is the worst mindset to use. Most of the time, the items you will need less materials for will sell for MUCH less. Bracers, white items, and other cheapies sell for almost nill at the AH. Instead of looking at how many skillups you can make with the amount of mats you have, you should instead look at how much each skillup is costing you.

If you can break even on your skillups, you're laughing. Make the items, sell them at AH, and buy more mats. Remember to watch the market for the mats you need, and buy them at their cheapest. Also, having a bank alt really is a godsend! If you've got 20 iron helms in your bank, you'll be much more inclined to sell the suckers at 50S a piece, making you lose tons of cash! Instead, send it all to an alt and be patient with your sales. If you can regularly sell those helms at 3G a piece, keep posting them up at that price! If someone starts undercutting you by a big margin, just stop selling them.

On my character, I constantly make rods, helms, and shoulders to keep my alt with as many different items I can. That way, I get to keep my options open on what market I want to work with. Watch steel/iron prices, along with ore/bar prices(although these are usually very close)

As of right now, I'm making Truesilver Gauntlets! They sell for 15-20 gold each, but with over a few weeks of watching the markets for the mats, I now have enough for 5 pairs and it only cost me 10G a piece. 5-10 gold per skill-up = major yays!
