You'll always have to buy some stuff at the AH(including recipes), just try to make the cheapest things you can if all you want to do is lvl. Other than that, farm as many mats as you can to get items/make money to lvl your skill.

Bracers are usually really low in mat costs, but the return you get for making them is extremely low too. 50S-1G each or something?

If I remember correctly, I made a good heap of money with the green iron helms. They take a bit more material to make, but if those are the ones I'm thinking about, they are the lowest level helms you'll find on the AH most of the time, and can therefore sell for quite a pretty penny. Also, rods can be made even with the bought mats for break-even or profit prices, even if you buy the stones and bars at the AH. I don't exactly remember all the recipes you can skill-up with at that lvl anymore, but even if the items are green to you and you can profit from making them, it's a good idea to at least think about tying up some cash into making them until they sell.

I was also able to make green iron hauberks at around that level for break-even/ VERY small profits too. It really does suck to have 50+ gold worth of mats on you that will gain you only 6 skill points, but getting your money back means that those 6 skill points we're totally free.
