Fishing as a money maker?Follow

#1 Mar 31 2007 at 10:22 PM Rating: Decent
Hi,

I really enjoy fishing and have raised it to 150 so far and plan on raising it much higher. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of fish I could fish for profit now and in the future.

Also, I'm new to WoW and I have a gnome warlock. What would be a good choice of professions? As of now I have tailoring and engineering, each at around 75 or so. (not tied to either.)

Thanks lots for the help.

Head for Menethil Harbor (Wetlands) Fish for Oily Blackmouth and Firefin Snapper. Sell those at the AH. Use the Rainbow Fin Albacore to raise your cooking skill.

Thanks, I'll do that.

I think fishing is the worst profession of WoW. It is sooo boriing. All you do is sit there and watch your lure and click every once and a while..

Yeah, but that's the kinda **** I like though. Cause I play on a laptop and so I'm always out in the living room with my roomates chillin out and watching some tv or something. I don't know why I like boring stuff like that. When I played RuneScape as a kid I had 97/99 fishing. X.X

Anybody know any good fish to fish once I get in the 200-225 area?

Hi

Other than oily blackmouth and firefin snapper, try fishing for deviate fish - all three are used in alchemy potions so are likely to sell on ah. I think deviate fish can also be used to cook something like "savoury deviate delight" although I don't have the recipe myself.

I would carry on getting your skill up higher. Soon you'll be able to enter the stranglethorn fishing contest on a sunday afternoon where you can catch "tastyfish" and hand them in for money/prizes.

Also if you fish in areas where u see "floating debris" then you can quite often pick up bound trunks that usually contain cloth or other goodies. I'd really recommend fishing in STV because you can get blackmouth and firefin snapper, and also Sagefish which restores health and mana.

Where's STV?

I think fishing is very relaxing. I love being occupied with such simple things because I can think very good while my hands do something easy and repeatable.
Maybe that is why I love knitting irl.

My friend who is much more active type (I would even say hyperactive) used to hate fishing. But when he spent few hours just fishing and chatting with me he said its really nice to take a break from running around. He got his skill pretty high since then :)

Lately we fish almost exclusively in Feralas for yellowtails to get those boxes with greenies, and everything else we catch along like eels, squid, firefins is extra profit.

I think I went to STV at quite low skill too and had to use lures at first, and if I remember correctly yellowtails can be caught there too. I was farming lures on Raven Hill and running all the way back to STV to enjoy some more fishing...... I simply love it :)

Fishing doesn't make as much money as the other gathering professions, but it will make you a bit.

I know exactly what you mean. I find it relaxing to just sit there fishing. I caught 21 oily blackmouths and 11 firefins earlier (and 63 rainbow things :P). I put them on the AH. I need to go get the expert book and get myself to lvl 20 so I can use it, I'm only 19.

Thank goodness that there are opinions other than yours.

Up to 225 skill, Fishing is much more lucrative than herbalism, mining, or cloth-gathering. The only gathering skill that beats it is disenchanting. Even up to high levels, it still makes the most money for the least amount of danger.

All I can say is - 20 firefins = 6g. That is what I made this weekend in the AH.
Thursday before the weekend - 15 deviates = 4g.

Fishing used to be a great money maker on most realms simply because of stonescale eels. However, since BC has hit, and most players are at level 70, there is less demand for said items. I don't know about life on your server, but on mine a stack of stonescale eel doesn't even touch the price of a stack of terocone, nightmare vine, etc... And you can gather a stack of the herb faster than a stack of the stupid fish if you know where you're going :/

Sadly, my fishing will probably remain at level 235ish on my rogue until I'm really (really really) bored... then I'll use it to max cooking which is currently at like 365.

Fishing is a worthwhile money maker and you should keep levelling it up. Since you are new to WOW and this is your first toon, I would recommend dropping tailoring and engineering for two gathering professions of your choice. I started out as a warrior with mining and blacksmithing for my first toon (not knowing any better)and was always struggling to find money for training, supplies, ect. All the good ore I was gathering was sunk into raising my blacksmithing (along with more money for other materials)and the products I was making would only sell for a loss. I dropped blacksmithing around level 30 and took up herbalism. That, combined with selling my ore has made enough money to afford training, a mount, and even the occasional gear upgrade without being broke afterwards. Except for the rabid levelling of herbalism to catch it up with mining I didn't really spend a whole lot of dedicated time to gathering either. I could be really wealthy if I did though. The lesson I learned is that the crafting professions are really fun and interesting but mostly require an investment of time and cash that a struggling first toon without a sugar daddy (or mama) really can't afford. Once you have a rich level 70 you can drop a gathering skill for a craft of your choice. There are ways to make money with crafting professions but it really hard to get there without a good source of income for the short term.

Thanks Evocable, I might take your advice cause I'm poor. :( But I'm level 20, so I figured that was normal haha.

What level can I cook Rainbow Fin Albacore at? And is that something I just cook over fire or do I have to find a Recipe? I have a like 150 of those sitting in my bank.

I am fishing deviate fish near Wailing caverns and then I make deviate savory delight...because I am bored with undead look after more than 100 hours of playing.

Good on fishing skill is that the skill can grow anywhere where you can fish / skill req. ofc. location/

I make 10 skill aprox. when I catch 50-60 deviate fish...

so keep on fishing :)

Could you clear that bit for me? All I found with + damage so far is basilisks meat.
I would prefere to fish for my add damage than kill anything if possible :)

There's a list of the cooking buffs in the Trade Skills FAQ.

My advice would be to fish for deviate fish beside the wailing caverns and take up leather working and skinning, that way you can skin the raptors and make deviate scale belts("Twink" item) and make even more money. :D
I make around 70g a day by doing this, hope this helps :)
