I just got alchemy 375 on my hordie and I was wondering if in general its worth the 500-1000g to specialize in elixirs, transmutes, or potions.
I know a chance to make an extra transmute will bring in money but I make a lot of elixirs and potions, and that would help me with lvl 70 dungeons and questing for rep. If anyone has already decided or has an opinion please post it.

No right or wrong answer here. I personally like elixirs because I like to solo. I didn't do transmutations because I wasn't interested. But I definitely would never do it to make money. If I did transmutations I'd do it because I like to transmute... I don't see extra transmutation as a source of money. There's no fast money in it...if you want fast money you're better off farming motes and selling the primals. The downtime on transmutations is atrociously long - and there are so many alchemists crying to others why they aren't making lots of money after investing in transmutations...I'd rather say "Hey, I'm a transmuter and I love to change things like Edward Elric :p"

In the end though, don't listen to me, ask yourself what you want to do and don't worry about what other people say. If you're 375 then you should know more than enough to decide for urself.

On another note, the only expensive specialization is the Transmutes due to the cost of Primals. There's no way Potion or Elixir mastery should even come remotely close to costing 500G.

There's a very good basic analysis on masteries in the Trade Skills FAQ as well.

I personally selected Potions because I am a Mana Pot addict. I wish it would proc slightly more often but I consider any extras a freebie.
