Completely and utterly noob question from a brand new playerFollow

#1 Mar 21 2007 at 5:52 PM Rating: Decent
So, I decided to take up skinning and leatherworking as my tradeskills, I've massacred some rabbits and deer and relieved them of their skins, but where do I start leveling my leatherwork? The recipies that the trader that let me start leatherworking are for skill lvl 15 and I'm only lvl 1, So where do I go to get those first few lvls?

Okay, first press "P" which is your skill pane. Press the boot icon (general tab). In there you should see your newly acquired abilities, leatherworking and skinning. Press on the leatherworking button and it should give you a few basic craftable items. That's what you should make in order to train your leatherworking up. Also, in order to train skinning, you should skin higher level beasts. The first few levels you'll be able to skin up to like level 6 or level 7 beasts. Later on, the amount of skinning skill you need is 5*mob level.

In order to skin some mobs, you will need to get +skinning gear, which can be acquired through enchants and items. Also, once you hit a certain level leatherworking, you will have to decide into which specialty you will go into. Either elemental, dragonscale, or tribal. Dragonscale goes into mail, so take it if you are a class that can wear mail at level 40. If you can wear plate, i suggest taking up blacksmithing. Elemental is more leather melee gear and tribal is more of leather casting gear.

Also, when you hover over a skill or beast, you will get a different colored text saying skinnable or in some cases, different colors (untrainable skills are red).

Red=Too low leveled; need more skill in order to perform the task
Orange=Good chance of leveling; may fail (sometimes skinning requires skinning several orange mobs before gaining a skill level, because of the abundance of beasts)
Yellow=okay chance to level, it's usually about 50/50
Green=Low chance of leveling
Gray=No skill ups are given

As some general advice for a new player, dont get into crafting at first, others will agree, and some will disagree.

Get your self 2 gathering professions (skin/mining) and sell the skins and ores on the Auction House.

You dont really begin to see much money at all from a crafting profession till much later on. 90% of he time you will be able to sell the mats alone on the AH for more than the finished product, the only real benifit is at the early levels you can craft yourself some starte gear, and at the high end levels where you start to craft BoP items (simalar to Rare-Ex in FFXI)

With 2 gathering its all profit, not wasting the mats on making things that wont sell for anything for skill ups.

I highly recommend this untill at least lvl 40, at that point you can have other means of making money so you might have some spare gold sitting around to boost a craft to the higher levels for some better gear. But in general you can just buy the gear for less that what you sold the mats to make it for.

Oh that makes more sense.

So rakradu's answer was on target.

Oh yeah and another thing, there are level caps on professions. You can see a trainer in order to increase the max level of your skill level (ie 75 to 150 becomes 150-225, etc.). In order to do so, there usually are most profession trainers in all major cities, except Jewel crafting. Only people with the expansion can get to the city that trains JC.

So...
At level 5: 75 is the base maximum skill level, any items increasing the skill level will be added
At level 15: 150
At level 25: 225
At level 35: 300
At level 50: 375

Basically the trainers would be able to train you to the next level (journeyman, expert, artisan, etc...) Some trainers require you to do a quest in order to upgrade your level. An example would be to get 300 cooking, you would need to do a quest in gadgetzan (not sure if this is the same for alliance). You complete the quest and he'll upgrade your max skill level.

Sorry if this is kind of incomprehensible, it was a long day for me.
Yeah, correct me if i'm wrong too.
