Skinning vs herbalismFollow

I am starting an alt and was thinking of taking mining and skinning eventually. I was going to start with mining and herbalism and switch out herbalism for skinning later. The reason for this is that I have an Alchemist that I can give the low end herbs to to help level alchemy faster. I know I can level skinning quickly once I switch. The question is- when to switch? I would like to wait until I am of a level to gather skins that sell for ? gold per stack as opposed to silver. I know economics are entirely server based but does anyone have a rough idea of what level mobs drop skins that sell for gold (generally) thanks.

I don't know how you plan to farm, but picking Skinning as your 2nd gathering makes a lot of sense because you can't have 2 types of tracking on at the same time which can be a severe pain if you want mining and herbalism. If you don't mind constantly switching them I don't see the problem with your idea since you can use the herbs for another character.

Finding stuff in the lowbie zones isn't hard at all even without any radar. I have been through so many times I generally know where to start looking for herbs and ore from memory.

Both have their upsides.

Herbalism you can find plants in almost any zone. You don't need any equipment to gather the plants.

Skinning you can get your leather after killing mobs. You get extra loot off your kills. But it only works on animals (or animal like mobs)

I started with skinning and mining.

Just pick 2 gathering professions to start you off, any 2 will do actually.

The moment that you start doing this is the moment you start losing gold. Actually, no. It's the moment you double your gold-losing potential. It's a bad idea to waste perfectly good sellable mats on levelling a money-sink profession with your main, and its twice as bad to throw away money with two toons.

I agree with ohmikeghod. Herbalism can be a very lucrative profession and using the mats to fuel an alt's profession isn't the best choice. If you're wondering when to switch to skinning I would suggest once you get your mount. That way you can double your gathering time with both professions. It might be better to switch out mining for skinning once you do switch because in my experience more gold is gained from herbalism than mining.

Well, if you plan to wait to switch to Skinning that seems pointless. It's pretty high up where stuff starts skinning for -real- g as far as I know. Plus, you'll have to go back to the noob areas to lvl it anyway. I was like a lvl 30 something LW and I still made crap for money unless someone went leather crazy and was paying insane for leather on Trade channel. lol

Stick w/ Herbalism. Double the herbs isn't too much, it's still good money, so double the money. Assuming your main has Herbalism too. Plus, more mats for you. :P
