What to charge?Follow

#1 Mar 13 2007 at 4:19 PM Rating: Decent
I can make Flask of Mighty Restoration. I have been making for free thinking people would at least tip but very few do and the ones who do tip 2g, hardly worth my time to stop what i'm doing, so...

I need some advice on what to charge per combine on these.

For a pot like that I would happily pay at least 10g a crack...taking in the mats for such an item too. I hate it when people will only buy an item at less than cost, people are so ignorant at the price it takes for some things to be crafted or found.

BTW the mats are:

1 fel-lotus
10 mana-thistle
20 dreaming glory
and a bottle, I forget what kind.

Thats along the lines of what i was thinking 10g per combine.

The situation today I made 6 of these for someone and all i got was the effert of the person typing 2 letters (ty. After that I said ok no more for free I have to start charging. Maybe it's my fault for thinking people would at least tip.

I'm not really sure if you realize what a tip is. A tip basically reflects a combination between your level of service, and your client's level of generosity. You should not depend on any one person to give you a tip. If someone does not feel generous, then by all rights they could simply not give you any tip. In real life, this is sometimes counteracted by adding a 'service charge' to your service. This essentially removes generosity from the equation, and it sounds like what you are expecting; a certain level of compensation from everybody, and maybe a little extra if someone is feeling generous.

Your problem is that your expectation of compensation is not matched by complete strangers with whom you have not shared your expectations. If you want money, you should probably ask for it.

If you're selling something, it's useful to know what the market rate is. If it's something that nobody else is selling, you have to cover your costs - not just the materials but your time as well - and make a little profit besides.

Not everyone will know what the materials cost. I certainly don't. In fact, if they do, they can probably make the item themselves so I would think you should focus on making money out of people that don't know the true cost of what you're selling.

And as far as expecting tips goes, don't. Tips, as Limeblue said before me, are at the whim of the buyer. I think everyone knows people will give as little as they can for something so tips are not likely to cover your costs.

Tips are for a service that is so common that ppl are actually unlikely to pay for it, or because they actually don't need it in the first place. For example if somebody comes to me with mats for a potion that is grey to me (and without a cooldown), or if I'm giving away free enchants to skill up, yeah a tip would be nice.

For anything else there's a price tag. If the person provides the mats I do it for cheap, and the person has to come to me (free for guildies). If I have to provide the mats then I charge full AH price (only mats price to guildies and sometimes not even that) and I usually COD.
