Fishing. The lowdown. The float goes in, bobs, i miss the fish. I proceed to destroy the rod and QQ in public chat. Any advice?

My advice? Don't. The only thing worse than explaining to my non-WoW friends that I spent 8 hours video game mining is telling them that I spent 8 hours video game fishing...but that it's ok because my fishing pole was a BoP item that I got for finishing a quest and it's really nifty because THIS one can be used as a potent weapon as well. (kills self). Seriously though. I have no openly beneficial advice other than to say that I hate video game fishing. IMO there is no good version, anything other than the real thing is junk. It is however one of the only ways to get important mats so it's the only skill that I support bots on. That is to say...I DO NOT SUPPORT BOTS (unless it's a fishing bot because fishing is annoying).

If you like wow fishing, more power to you.

I can stand fishing in WoW for about the length of time one lure lasts. And even then only about once every 4 days...

I find fishing both relaxing and lucrative. If you are having problems catching fish, try using lures. They up your skill temporarily and you'll have less missed fish. Remember that nobody forces you to fish and you'll have more fun actually doing the fishing. You can quit at any time you want.

Be happy, at least in this game your rod does not physically break like in FFXI. And that your bait is not consumed each time a fish catches your hook (whether or not you catch the fish). And that all you need to do is click on the lure, rather than struggle against the fish. And that you do not have a few seconds of cooldown after each attempt.

Fishing is great if you want to make money while chatting with your guild.

There are myriad ways to make money, though, so if you don't like fishing you can do something different. Some people grind demons in Felwood. I don't find that to be exciting, either. It just interferes with typing more.

OK so you hate fishing...have you read any of the posts about fishing?? Of course if you are a high enough lvl it doesn't matter or you have other means of making good money. OR, the perks of suppling yourself or guildies with reagent fishfor alchemy makes you feel good...lol

But, if you are a low lvl like me and just enjoy the small amounts of gold I make selling reagent fish, I love it. My guildies love me because I supply them with all the fish they need.
But, the plus - I sell stacks of 5-6 firefins for(depending on the day or week) anywhere from 1g70s - 1g90s.
There are different types of fish also that sell for different perks.
Deviate Fish - make you turn into a ninja or sailor - stack of 5 for about the same rate.
Eels - go for about 1eel - 1g.
So for small amounts of gold you can sell the fish and make profits.

actually I dumped fishng for quite some time , appearently I had the wrong icon in my toolbar and was un able to cast my line ... Recently have picked it back up and have been spending time here and there fishing abit trying to get my skill up so that I can fish where ever I wish ... as of now I prety much have to fish way low lvl waters in Mulgore... The good thing is , I feel it is a nice little break from the heavy grinding I have been doing as of late ... A question however ... at what point do you realy start to catch fish worthy of some decent coin ? I mean all I catch right now I can't even feed to my lvl 45 bear ... and I have yet to catch any green items or anything like that ... and do you have to go back to the trainer to up your skill ever so often as with other professions ?

The fish you catch doesn't depend on your skill, but where you're fishing. Of course, where you can fish reliably (no 'got away' messages) depends on your fishing level.

The starting areas all have almost-worthless fish. To get the alchemy fish, you need to go further afield. Check out the fishing guides for more info.

I found that a good indication of where you should be fishing for food is where you should be questing. At level 45, you should be at least fishing in Hinterlands and Tanaris. By the way, Tanaris also has stonescale eels.

For money fishing, you should try the schools in STV, Tanaris and Azshara.

If you are Alliance then head to Darkshore, get some shiny baubles and fish the oily blackmouth pools to skill up. You can raise your skill and catch valuable fish in a safe starting zone. Some pools are along the deserted beach areas north of Auberdine and you won't even have murlocs to worry about.

I also find fishing relaxing and a good times to chat with guildies. Also the fish you catch can help you level your cooking skills. If you just want to level it slowly, do it one lure's duration at a time. Plus, what are doing, just standing around waiting for the boat with your hands in your pockets? Fish till the boat gets here!
If you want to make coin while leveling your fishing, try to fish debris (those circles with broken boxes in them.) Also for good reagent fish, look for the fishing schools (those shimmering circles found near Ratchett, Grom'Gol, in Ashenvale, most everywhere ... .)

Here's a tip for anyone reading this: If you are currently leveling your character, and want to take a break, fishing is a nice idea. You can fish in Stormwind and Orgrimmar(spelling?) and you get rested experience while you fish, because your fishing level will go up no matter where you fish. Hope this helps!

I glanced through the answers and perhaps missed this but,

If the fish "gets away" your skill level is too low in the area you are fishing in, just a bit.

So, for example (and I am not sure about these number, just an example) the level required to fish in Wetlands is 75. Your fishing skill is 77. So far, so good.

You still may have a few problems catching some of the fish in the area, for a few more skill levels. There will be random "your fish got away" until maybe you hit skill 85.

It may have aslo been stated, but remember. You can level up your fishing skill regardless of where you fish. You can have a skill of 245 and fish Crystal Lake in Goldshire and level.

The higher your fishing skill = the more "catches" you need in order to level up a skill.

If you are fishing skill 50, you may level up every 2-3 "catches". When you are skill 245, it will perhaps take 10-11 "catches" to gain a level.

I used to think fishing sucked because I didn't understand that, like leveling killing mobs, dont start in a zone that's too high for you. Just like it might take your pally 15 minutes to kill a single mob 5 levels higher than you, it may take you 30 minutes to catch a single fish if ur in the wrong zone fishing.

Also, I love fishing because its perfect on those nights where I have too many beers and instead of destroying my gear dying I can kick back and catch some fish instead. Just like IRL you may miss a few more hits but it doesn't take extraordinary concentration to catch a few.

Another cool thing is that you dont actually have to clean them, the knives, soak the fillets, freeze if you caught too many etc like you would IRL.

You can kick back and catch a buzz and no mess to clean up, you didn't spend any gas/bait money, no DUI etc.

I swear, if they ever are able to simulate the smells/sights/sounds of the real thing I'll never go fishing again IRL. Unless its purpose is to hang with friends for a while and/or get a tan.

Hehe, fishing is also a great way to pass the time when you're looking for a group and no one seems to want to do anything that interests you. I got my epic mount and ever since then, all I've really done is fish and do instances. Still waiting for my guild to key up for Kara so I'm gonna be fishing for awhile still :)

On a side note, I caught Mr. Pinchy and I got the magical Crawdad! :)

A good tip for Alliance to level their fishing, slowly but surely.

Take a rod with you wherever you go. Before you reach level 58, you're going to be crossing continents many times.

How does Alliance cross continents? By boat!

Each time you're waiting for the boat, it could be 5 skill up points.

Use the boat 60 times, Zing!

And hit as many "Floating Wreckage" piles as you can .. some good stuff can come out of them.

I've gotten a blue weapon out of a box from floating wreckage in Booty Bay. schwing.

Oh, and Fishing is almost a necessity for hunters. I've spent many nights fishing alone when no one wants to do anything.
