Fishing in open sea/lake/riverFollow

Hi,

I've been trying hard to find information about that in the older threads but I can only find questions/answers about fishing locations for skill ups.

I'm not really concern about where to skill up since it's very easy and you can just skill up anywhere. I want to know if I would be wasting my time fishing in the open areas (not in schools of fish). Do I get crates? rares? where is the best open place to fish and expect goodies?

Now I have been fishing in schools and wreckages only and I got a lot of good stuff, I also often find crates in schools (in STV). The few times I fished in ponds/lake/river, not in any schools, I just catched normal fishes that I just throw away anyways since they aren't worth much.

So where could I go fishing that would be better than STV (because to be honest I am kinda sick of that place)?

Thanks

Edit : I am over 260 fishing skill at the moment without any lures and +fishing gears.

You do get chests and alchemy fish when not fishing in schools, but with a much reduced chance. Other than killing time while waiting for boats, there really is no point fishing outside of schools. Other than STV, the other places I fish are
* Hillsbrad Foothill - If you are alliance, start from Southshore and work your way southwards. However, there are no stonescale eels in this zone.
* Tanaris - Start from Steamweedle Port and work southwards along the coast. You'll need a lure with 260. The mobs in southern Tanaris can be in the high 40s, and they walk around the shore a bit. I'm not sure about your character level, so this zone might be a bit too high level for you, as you only mention STV.

All that fishing and you're not skilling up cooking with it?

That's the only reason I would use to not fish a pool. You need the non-school type fish for your cooking recipes.

I've been using this guide:

Thanks for your replies and yes I'm sorry I forgot to mention my level since it is rather important. I am a lvl 47 druid.

I do cooking, but right now I am capped at 225, almost done with the quest tho. But I fish mostly to supply my alchemy and to find boxes in the sea :) I think it's exciting everytime I get a crate lol.

There are some useful fish you can catch that are not in schools, especially in the higher levels. I haven't seen any Nightfin schools yet, although Nightfin Soup has a very nice mana regen buff for it's level, for example. And there are the plated armorfish and lightning eels that were (are they still?) needed for the Craftsman's Writs quests in EPL for Argent Dawn rep.

But if you're basically fishing for cash, stick to the spawns.

crates are awesome. I've gotten at least 3 rares and a ton of uncommons in just 1 day of fishing in STV. But then again, thats like 6 hours of fishing XD

especially with the "wreckage" nodes

I always stick to the schools and floating debry. The alchemy fish of course are the money fish. My guildies laugh at me because I am always fishing, but then I always get the question Can you send me some firefins, or oilys. I laugh back.
My personal advise, if worth anything...lol, stick to the schools. Just keeps you from wasting time. But then I am only lvl 206 fishing so I haven't made it to the big stuff yet. But I hope to be at your lvl in the next few weeks.

Ok I made some more research, I did not know about that before posting..

i looked in the fishing by area, and a lot of areas has pattern, greens, recipes etc... So I guess it can also be worth to fish outside of schools.

Never the less, thanks for all your advices. I came to the conclusion that it is profitable to fish outside the pools, for the fishes like the nightfin snapper.

And yes Rakradu, crates are awsome lol I have been fishing in STV going up and down the coast and getting lots of mithril bound boxes with rares and uncommon items. Made a little fortune there :)

Deviate fish is quite common in some (2 I think) of the barrens oases, although there are no spawns per se. So fishing in the open can be good if you know where to fish...

There are Deviate pools in all three of the Oases in the Barrens. They do get fished out at times and seem to take a while to respawn. I have never seen a pool in the water in WC though I know people fish for deviates in there.

I don't fish open water much but I did for a while in Tanaris when I was too low of a level to go find the pools. The boxes were a lot rarer but the other fish I was catching and cooking is still great food for my level (47) and got my cooking skill up high very quickly. Now I can range down as far south as the pirate area and fish relatively safely in the pools. I also fished quite a bit in Desolace as most of the pools are fairly safe after clearing a few mobs unless that elite giant happens to decide it's time for a swim.

If I need firefin, I would go to Windshear Crag in Stonetalon and fish the pools that look like spilled oil. Those always bring me firefin plus the usual odd stranglekelp, rum and boxes. There also seems to be a high number of wreckage pools there though the quality of the items is lower level than in Tanaris and Desolace since the box contents are based on the level of the zone.

When you fish the coast of Tanaris, you get a number of clams - out of those, you get a small yield of pearls. That's really the only reason I'd fish outside of the schools/pools. You get more clams from fishing than from the innards of the turtles in Tanaris...

and fishing in outlands is so much sweeter, i can get matts via feliron ore and bolts and other engie crap to get someone to make me a gun or sell the matts for 15g per a stack of feliron ore, Motes of water are also everywhere 5-6 primals per 2 hours of fishing. In the end i make about 100 gold if i fish for 2-3 hours with farming other stuff inbetween

At the end of last year, I started a thread about fishing in Azura. You're probably a bit too low level for this but off the coast of Azura you can fish stonescale eels right out of the open sea, but you need over 300 in fishing, which means that you need the best lures, and fishing enchants/gear. I'll try and locate the thread and link it here for your viewing.

Here it is, hope the link works right:

Fishing for Stonescale Eels

Keep in mind that this thread was made before BC and so the info might be out dated, but its all the data that I was able to collect on the best fishing spot in the pre-outland world of Azeroth.

Thanks fitzerific for the great info. I, like Gleaming, am money hungry and have been trying to lvl up fishing in order to make my fair share of gold by catching/selling eels. I found on my server there is not high AH of eels. Usually around 5-6 at any given time. They usually sell for 1eel - 1g. SO my eyes lit up. Off to Booty I went last night,11pm, trying to catch a few for gold.
Sad to say nothing. I caught about 20+ raw rockscale cods, 1 oil covered fish, and couple of oilys. This within about 45mins. NO eels. So decided to make my way to Azshura. Well that was not a good idea...lol. Well managed to catch to fish - but with blank loot screens. Bad part managed to die twice to. The ?? mobs kept finding me. So decided to hang up my hat and head back to Stonetalon.
In stonetalon I catch approx 20-25 fires in this area, not to mention the numerous sealed trunks. Firefins are selling like hotcakes on my server at this moment so I will stick to those for now. Sold 15 yesterday for 5g.
I have learned a lot and will return to some of the areas ya'll noted. Of course when I get to a higher lvl...lol

There's a reason why there are so few eels on the AH. When I fish in Tanaris and STV, I usually find only 1-2 eel school in one sweep of the coast. I suspect the situation isn't better in Ferelas. (I don't fish there since it's a bit of a hike from Ironforge).
