There are no "best" professions. If there was everyone would have them.

To chooses which onesyou want you need to decide what you want from your professions.
If you want to make your own weapons then mining+blacksmithing is the way.
If you want to make your own rings, necklaces, trinkets and gems then mining+jewelcrafting is best.
If you want to make your own armour then skinning+leatherworking would be the choice.
However if you want to make money then skining+herbalism/mining is the route.

Remember you can also learn first aid, cooking and fishing with no impact on your 2 professions.

well... seeing as right now the best weapons are bop craftables I would say BS/mining. Most of the mail items in BS equal to or better than the Dragonscale ones in LW anyways so its a fairly safe route. I would avoid jewel crafting, alchemy, and enchanting as you propably have people in your guild that have it maxxed out and you would end up playing catch up for along time to be able to do the same things.

Well Omen there is not a perfect answer either way.

Leatherworking/skinning is great because you can armor yourself as you lvl up. This will be great for a Shaman until lvl 40. At lvl 40 shaman can wear mail armor. If you get your leatherworking up high enough you can then create mail armor also. So if you lvl up in leatherworking fast enough you can make all of your own armor. You will have to buy some minor items here and there probably but this would be my first pick.

If you wanted to be a gather - go with skinning, mining and/or herbalism. This way you can just farm and sell everything. But then of course you are at the mercy of the market.

Personal opinion - Jewelcrafters on my server are hard to find. I have 40+ people in my guild and do not have one jeweler. Trinkets, rings, and neclaces with the nice little buffs are always good sellers on my server.

So really just have to decide which route to go. If you are looking to help yourself and your guild - leather/skinning or blacksmithing/mining. If you want to be for yourself and just try to focus on money - jewelry/mining - or take up farming profs.

If you're guilded, talk to your guild and see what's lacking. There's no point duplicating something that half the guild already do but if there's a hole in the skillset, get in there.

Last guild I was in didn't have jewelcrafters so we had two choices: pay exhorbitant prices on the AH or do without. Damn, it sucked.
