Apprentice Fisherman can't cast to fishFollow

#1 Feb 25 2007 at 10:04 PM Rating: Decent
One of my characters got trained in fishing and got a fishing pole, but I am unable to cast. I filed a ticket, but was told by WOW admins that they couldn't give game advice.

Every other character I've played did not have this problem. Is the game malfunctioning, or did I miss something important?

When I had trouble fishing with my first character, it was because I used the actual fishing pole as action icon instead of the fishing skill. Suffice to say, I didn't get much fishing done. But I'm sure you have not done the same mistake as I did.

You have to equip the fishing pole in order to fish. You have to be near a deep body of water (something you generally can't stand in) in order to cast. You should start at a pool near your faction starting zone. It is also good to buy a lure. To equip the lure, right click it and click your fishing pole while it's equipped. The lure lasts for 10m and increases your fishing skill.

Yes, you probably aren't actually casting yet. Open your spell book and look in the general tab for the fishing skill - it should show an icon with a fish hook on it. Click on it, or drag it to your action bar to make it more useful.

Then watch your screen for error messages - if you get something like "your skill isn't high enough" then you need to find an easier body of water to fish, or use a lure. If you get something like "cast did not land in fishable water" then you are either trying to fish someplace that doesn't have any fish, or you just missed the water with your cast. You can't really aim, so you might try making two or three casts before giving up on it - the casts will land in the water in about a 90 degree arc to your front. If you do get the cast to land, you will see a bobber in the water and a bar slowly scrolling down at the bottom of your screen - when the bobber splashes, click on it and you should land a fish. If the scrollbar reaches zero and disappears before the bobber splashes, nothing bit.

When you click on the bobber you may get other messages - either you wil have a lootable box for whatever you caught, or you may get "Your fish got away" which if you get several times in a row means you are at the lower limit of being able to fish here - get a lure to raise your skill. If it says "No fish are hooked" then you didn't get the splash before you clicked the bobber.

Good luck - keep after it and let us know what happens.
