Leveling in FishingFollow

#1 Feb 23 2007 at 3:58 PM Rating: Decent
I need to figure out what level of fishing I need to catch certain types of fishing. Currently at 158, tried to fish in Feathermoon, but said my skill wasn't high enough. Anyone know where I can find a list of the level you need to be to fish in certain areas. I need this for my alchemy. Thanks for any help

I think it depends on how many fish you catch, not which ones. And I'm currently fishing at Booty bay, started fishing there at 150, am now 213.

You should be between 200 and 250 to fish successfully in Feralas. This guide is very helpful and can be found in the left column under guides.

You can level your fishing ANYWHERE. All that matters is catching fish, not the type of fish, and not the location where you fish. You can go to 300 fishing in the newbie pond behind Goldshire or the lagoon inside Orgrimaar. It's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.

Yup, the way to level your fishing is to successfully catch a certain number in a row and not see the "your fish got away!" messages. The best place to do that is in a zone lower than your skill level, so you can fish successfully. Fishing in a higher level zone obviously will net you better fish, of course, but you can sit in Stormwind all day and level if that's all you're after.

Is this still valid?

Because at around 200 now, I don't get many (if any) skillups when I fish in the low level areas, while fishing up in Booty Bay, for example, will give me fast skillups.

From what we can tell from over two years of experience, fishing does not work that way. Assuming that you do not get the message that your fish got away, changing zones makes no difference whatsoever in how many fish you catch. The only difference fishing in different zones will make, again assuming you do not get the message that your fish got away, is the type of fish you pull up.

Leveling up fishing is based upon a simple concept, the higher your skill the more fish you have to pull in before you gain a skill point. For example, when you first start fishing you will gain a skill point with every fish you pull up. But at 235 fishing it may take you 6 to 9 successful catches before you gain a point. I read an excellent post once, I can’t even remember which site it was on, which listed the approximate number of casts per certain level ranges all the way to 300.

So if all you want is skill then simply stay in the starter zone and fish. But if you are trying to level up your cooking or feed a pet, it becomes a bit more complicated. That’s when you have to seek out higher level zones to be able to fish up the higher level fish.

Just a tidbit: Took me about 25 catches to go from 341 to 342.

Yesterday, I was waiting on mail from an alt in Darnassus, and having nothing better to do, I took my lowbie's fishing skill from 152 to 203. I know I could have gone elsewhere and caught money fish, but the mailbox was close, the bank was close, and the trainer was close - so why move? The money fish will come.

From my experience the fishing levels up faster in higher areas, if u can successfully catch fish there. I've tested this, and it took me around 25 fishes caught in Orgrimmar (1 fishing skill req) to get from 351 to 352, but only around 16 to get from 352 to 353 in Feralas (205 fishing skill req), and when trying to fish in Winterspring (330 fishing skill req), i had to catch about 16 fishes also, but i also had about 10-12 "Your fish got away" messages.

I think this is because each catch gives you a chance on skillup, rather than being like xp where x number of catches are required for a skillup. I believe a larger sample size would make it easier to predict exactly what the chances are.

Just to compare things a bit, I have about 170 fishing skill and I was fishing off the coast of ratchet yesterday (good for me cos I can get fish oily blackmouths + I get stranglekelp and I fish the "debris" nodes which can have nice loot). Anyhow I got a skillup every 4-5 successful catches.

Two questions that I have not seen mentioned elsewhere:
- do you get more skillups with a higher int, as is the case with weapon skills? Because I tried yesterday with int 120 and 210 (I am a druid so I have a full set of +int gear) and I didn't notice any difference.
- is it important how fast you right-click to catch the fish? Or do you always have say, 1 second to do so?

No, int makes no difference in fishing skill ups at all. I have a stupid warrior, and my husband has a smart priest. We always fish together and we are about +/- 1 level different in fishing, and it's not always him ahead.
