I'm thinking of leaving FFXI and maybe start playing WoW.

I have narrowed down to 2 classes I want to play: Shaman and Druid. Here are some questions about which trade skill I should choose.

1. Which tradeskill would be a better choice for these classes?

2. Should I focus training a trade skill so that I can provide armor, potions, etc for myself or just choose a trade skill that would net me the most money?

3. Should I focus on a durable goods trade skill or a consumable goods trade skill?

Thanks in advance!

Shaman - mining/armorsmith or jewelcrafting(popular skill going on right now becuase of the new socketed items) or skinning/leatherworking (u can make ur own armor and sell it too)

druid - sign big long list of things u can do with a druid, the more popular of which are tailoring and enchanting, i have a druid and i dropped enchanting becuse it takes money to enchant, so i have tailoring and mining for the time being, but i would syay another good profession to go with tailoring would be skining becuase some tailored items require leather, (there are these really nice (blue item) boots u can make but u have to have leather and it's a ***** becuase you have to find someone to give/sell u the leather or you need to go to the auction house)

but all in all ive found that engineering and enchanting are the most expensive to have so if ur looking to make money i wouldnt go with that.

herbalsim is okay is used to be great but since everyone and their dogs are saving for flying mounts (which in mine and many others opinions, blizzard made waaayyyy to expensive)uit's gone down significantly, but herbalism and alcehmy are still very useful for yourself as well.

As this will be your first character on WoW whichever you choose, I'd suggest that both your main professions be gathering types. This is simply because, eventually, all crafting skills are a money sink.

At the moment, I think mining and herbalism are the most profitable. Why? Mining produces various bars all used by 3 crafting professions - never stuck for a customer. Herbalism is a simple profession, and several herbs are quest items (kingsblood for example) and are sought out in large quantities.

By selling all these, you will generate a far higher income than if you gathered/crafted and sold the crafted items because everyone floods the market with their multiple similar items.

Get the gold, buy the cheap crafted kit (or better!) and watch that bank balance grow.

While I don't disagree with you, for a new player, taking both mining and herbalism can be tricky. You can only have either the mining tracker or herbalism tracker going - not both. So you either have to keep switching back and forth between trackers, have enough experience to know where the various nodes spawn, or use an add-on that keeps track of where the nodes spawn. Again, not impossible, but it could be confusing to someone new to the game.

This is why I would recommend for a new player to take either mining or herbalism and skinning. Skinning doesn't have a "tracker" - you just skin beast-type mobs that you kill or are lying around from other kills. Stacks of skins, especially the higher-level ones, sell for a decent amount on the auction house.

I think because of all the jewelers right now that mining and skinning might be a good choice.

Don't forget you can take all of the secondary trade skills as well - fishing, cooking, and first aid. Many folks here swear by fishing as a good ongoing moneymaker.
