ive been hearing that somehow you can tearapart ore to get gems?
anybody know if this is true? and how is it done

check for the skill called Prospecting, if you are a jewlcrafter it should be avaialbe.

Yes - you need 5 pieces of ore and the prospecting skill (learned at a fairly low level of jewelcrafting) and you get a gem but it destroys the ore in the process.
Prospecting is learned from the JC trainer at skill lvl 20.
You have to be a certain JC skill lvl to prospect each type of ore. The only one I know for sure is prospecting Mithril requires 175 JC.
You have a chance of getting a gem. My one and only prospect of Mithril produced Mithril Dust (gray quality) ftl.
