That's pretty much it. Right click the moment you see the splashing, and you should be able to reel a fish in. Two things though:
1. Try making sure you're fishing in a place appropriate to your level. I found starting in a city to be difficult, but starting in water by your low level zone to be better for 1-50~ skill. (For example, as a Tauren I get to 50+ skill at Stonebull Lake, instead of Thunderbluff).
2. Find a fishing supplies vendor, and buy Bait. It works like a temporary enchant to +Fishing on your Rod. This should help you get started.

Up your fishing skill a bit by using a lure when you first start fishing. That extra 25% makes a big difference.

What sort of message do you get at the top of the screen when you right click on your bobber? If it says "No fish are hooked" then you haven't waited long enough to get the splash. If it says "Your fish got away" several times in a row, you are at the lower limit of skill required for that area. (If you're just starting, you will probably get this message wherever you fish). Using bait will temporarily increase your fishing level to the point where you can catch fish much more frequently.

Orgimmar is perfect to start but you need to buy a lure!

I was fishing just fine yesterday, caught a few fish...but today, I can't get my line to cast out! I can select my pole (which is baited) but it won't cast out. there are no error messages at the top, and I've tried several locations including the ones where I was catching yesterday. any ideas? I've been wasting bait trying to cast out...

after doing some reading, I might not have a lure only the bright baubles! ack, I think this might be my problem...I need to login and check! (duh!)

Put the fishing "spell" from you spell book on the toolbar. Then cast from there.

You right click on the bobber then left click on the fishing rod to "enchant" the rod with the bobber.

Remember to look for the Blue Circles in the water, always cast in them. The fishing is better and you get gear and fish.

Also look for "debris" floating in the water, like the Blue Circles, they are named targets. You get trunks of loot. I usually get cloth and leather. Depends on where you are fishing.

Good places to fish are Loch Modan, Wet Lands and Dark Shore. Walk the entire shoreline, the Blue Circles show up about every 200-400 yards?

You might have to go in the water to fish if the Blue Circle is too close to shore or in shallow water. Sometimes you have half a circle.

Just keep casting until the end of the line lands in a circle.

The circle only lasts for 3-5 good catches. then if fades, but like an Mob it comes back.

correct as far as it goes. If you put the pole on the toolbar, clicking on it will only equip it (move it from your backpack to your weapon slot). Clicking on the fishing icon will actually cast your lure out to the water. What I've done with my toons is I map the casting button to a hotkey (I use the letter "Q", but if you use keyboard navigation, you might want to consider a different option). That way, pressing the letter will re-cast the bobber, instead of maneuvering around with the mouse to re-cast.

After fishing, don't forget to re-equip your regular weapon. Hitting mobs with a fishing pole might be satisfying, but it does the pole no good.

ok I feel like such a ding-dong! I forgot I had the fishing icon in my spellbook, which of COURSE is what you need to click to start fishing! I kept clicking the fishing pole icon! duh!!!! the pics look so similar, and because I had only fished the one other time before...

Oh and I did kill someone with my pole the other day because I forgot to switch back to my weapon - thank goodness the monster was 3/4 dead from my spells! double duh for me!!!
