May I skin your kills?Follow

One time I had someone pst me that it was impolite to skin their kills without asking permission.

He wasn't skinning them, so I made the (correct) assumption that he wasn't a skinner. I played along and asked if I could skin his kills, and he of course said yes.

But a few minutes I came to realize that I've never had a miner ask me if he could tap a mine I happen to be standing by, so how is that any different?

If you are a skinner, do you ask permission before skinning other ppl's kills?
If you are not a skinner, do you think we should?

I don't ask permission to skin, but I wait to see if the person moves on after killing. I don't skin if they are still standing by the mob.

As for mining, if someone is fighting a mob next to a mining node, I will not mine (Unless it's opposing faction). I may whisper them to ask if they plan to mine but usually I just wait to see.

I usually whisper to ask if someone is mining a node they are fighting near, especially in some of he heavily farmed caves. Same for skinning, if it appears that someone is leaving the bodies behind. I have had people mine a node that I was actually standing on while I was fighting, and had people skin mobs on me as soon as I had finished looting them. Yes it's polite to ask, but it certainly doesn't happen often, and rather than expecting it, I'm rather startled and pleased when somebody actually does ask.

I agree with you: if a player leaves a corpse unskinned, it probably means he can't skin it so you might as well. However, I can see the distinction he's trying to make: mining nodes are free for all (miners) to mine, while a corpse requires someone (in this case, not the skinner) to do the killing.

Realy? if the node had Mobs arround it somebody had to do the killing.

I don't ask myself, but I do give the person the opportunity to skin their own before I step in.

Yes, but the general rule is that the person who fights to the node gets the mine. This is reinforced by the fact that most nodes are out of the way: you need to specifically kill those mobs to get the trade goodies.

With skinning the non-skinner is killing mobs anyway, with no intent at trade goodies. How often do you see non-miners clearing a node just for the sake of it?

Wow, you people have restored my faith in the WoW community. I can't tell you how many times (but it has been a lot) I have been fighting a mob right next to a node and some jerk comes along and mines it while I am still fighting. I don't ask permission to skin, but I do wait to see if the other person is going to skin before I go in.

I did both mining and skinning while waiting for BC and I noticed that it was very easy to skin and level that, but while you are busy fight to clear a mine some jerk just runs in and mines it. If you ask them why they did that, they act like you are the idiot for not mining it first even though it was guarded. I wish people would have sked me if they could mine. I maight have had a higher mining skill now.

I skin and mine with my rogue.
If someone takes my node when I'm in the process of killing the last mob I just vanish and start mining myself after the mob attacks the other player. The other guy does tend to get the point.
For skinning I've never been stolen from. Amazingly. And I've never asked before skinning but I always check if the other guy is a skinner.

Always ask first. If they aren't skinning, still ask. It's polite.

Mining is a little different. Usually you can see them mining the deposit. If they don't ask and you planned on mining it, I'd say yell at them. ^^

Lol - my problem is usually rogues. Whle I'm fighting the mobs next to the nodes, they stealth in and mine the node behind me. Paladins aren't particularly stealthy... <clank, clank, clank>

The worst experience I had was when a mob spawned behind me while I was mining a silver vein. I had removed two ore before it spawned, and while I was fighting it off, a rogue appeared next to the node and finished mining it. I sent him a tell with the single word "jerk", and he responded "you are /ignored. I saw this node first."

I think one of my funniest experiences was when I decided as a level 50 that I wanted to mine some rich thorium veins in Un'Goro crater. I did find one, and as I got close to it, I was attacked by a level 56 mob. That fight took over fifteen minutes (all of my damage spells were resisted, so I was reduced to doing melee damage and saving my mana to heal myself), and during that time and undead rogue came up to the node, watched me fight for quite a while, mined out the node, continued watching me fight for a while, /cheered me, then took off, while I was still fighting. I decided to level up some before trying another node in that area.

I have never asked a person if i can skin one of their kills! If they leave it behind and don't skin it, its a free for all! Infact if it was cross faction i might even try and beat them to it if they were a skinner!!

Just out of interest, all those who ask for permission and the person says "no, you can't skin my kills" what would you do once they walk off? Would you leave the skinable corpse just sitting there knowing it could up your skill level, or do you wait til the guy has gone, skin it and hope they don't come back?

Lol - good question!

Usually I phrase my request as "are you skinning those?" or "are you a skinner?" and the reply comes back as "Yes I am" or "No, help yourself".

Stuff them, if they go, just take it.

If someone leaves a corpse, then it becomes public domain, IMO. What I dislike is the player who comes up as I kill something, then waits for me to loot it, and then tries to skin it before I can click on it again. I always try to leave vendor trash on the corpse if someone does that- there's nothing more irritating to a skinner than a visible corpse that's unskinnable.
I recall one time I was leveling my skinning, and a player did that twice. I then put him on /follow and returned the favour several times before sending him a whisper to stop skinning my kills. He got the message. Smiley: sly

I've never asked, but then again, I've never skinned when the killer is nearby either. Usually there's a field full of corpses with nobody around, or they're at the end of a trial of 6-7 corpses strewn over a wide area. In those cases, it's obvious they're not skinners, so might as well grab the skins.

I've never seen anyone hovering over my kills to try to beat me to the skin, but then I've never encountered crowding of any sort in WoW (only been playing 2 months, and on Horde side, so maybe that makes a difference). Now THAT's slimey, and such situations would make me wish I was on a PvP server :)

Possibly the hover and skin players are trying to level their skill beyond their ability to kill the target? Or just plain slack or "saving on repairs" *gag*.

I did skinning a while ago... can't say I encountered this issue at the time. I did just go skinning whatever people left behind for a while (no trace of them on the screen) rather than stood around waiting someone to off some beasty.

Another issue that I've encountered in this vein are chest thieves. You clear an area to access the chest and a random runs in and empties the chest while you're indisposed.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea, but after reading the thread I'm seriously considering mentioning nick and such to /1. Might lead to crap flinging contest, though :/ Or depend on the approach.

Generally, with my skinners I'm the same way as most. If the one killing the mobs just walks off after looting, it's fair game. However, I will start asking if I do see someone as it is the polite thing to do.
I've had the mining nodes/chest/even a couple herb thing happen to me a few times and remember being pissed about it.

Ironically enough I had some dwarf thieve a chest on me after I cleared out the camp of gnolls in red ridge. He was kind enough to just leave me the milk though. - 1/26

BEAUTIFUL! I'll have to remember that one ;)

I rather believe in the "3-fold" law... if they steal 1 from me, then I ***** them out - telling them I'll now follow them around and take 3 from THEM (skinning OR mining) Actually in following them around most of the time I've found them to be "bots" and reported them (not to mention them not responding to me.

AND if I've mistakenly skinned someone else's kill (I mean ya just STAND there for a couple minutes, I'm tired of waiting for you to just "mmove along"... I've either killed 3 mobs FOR them to skin or I've assisted them in killing several - Usually healing them or 1st aid, or hitting their would-be kills w/ Faerie fire etc... for several kills.

I've also just run out of the mobs area when it's been a mine - so them they attack the mine thief, and I mine it instead.... but by then they've usually gotten a couple ore out of it....

Needless to say we need to put Herbalizim in this catagory too. I can not tell you how meny times I have been fighting my way twards a plant when I am allmost there when someone eles comes up and grabes it. Now by looking at the wake of corpses I have left in my path there could only be one thing I was going for duh the plant. I have even wispered a few but allways get some smart comment like oh it didit have your name on it, oh yeah thanks for the help!

I allways wait untill they move away or when I was doing skinning and they was still in the area, I would send them a wisper. I know alot of times I would kill several things then collect the skins. Its just polite to ask.
