Mining expert opinion neededFollow

Hello fellas!

I am new to WoW and I have two miners. One is lvl 37, one is lvl 21, which means that one has a significant advance over the other one.

My lvl 37 currently has 210 mining and it has been a pain to reach this level because I was missing green/yellow/orange nods in areas with mobs of my level and I could not level up mining by melting bars as it was all grey.

NOW, MY QUESTION: my lvl 21 has about 130 in mining, which allows him to melt everything up to iron: would it be possible to level up mining on this lvl 21 by just melting what my lvl 37 gets when mining nods... just a way to level up two characters without mining twice as much.

Any ideas on that? My feeling is that it's going to be difficult because melting seems to allow leveling up mining only in a limited way (very quickly, it becomes grey), but I hope I am wrong and it might work...

Thanks for your views,

nostra

There will be opportunities to skill up via smelting in spurts. Your idea has merit and it's worth doing, I think. But there will be gaps that require you to take the lower level character out to mine to skill up.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I feared it would be this way, as I just had to go mining some tin in order to be able to melt the next type of ore. I did not check carefully, but I have the feeling that melting is a great way to level up very early on (copper mainly) but then gets really bad. I am wondering if melting an ore that one can mine really brings anything or if it is grey right away (if not, most probably green). Anyway, I'll try to save some mining by melting a bit more with my small toon.

Thanks,
nostra

In my experience, after Copper smelting goes grey, there are not many chances to skill up with smelting. By the time I can learn the smelting skill for an ore, it is green already and won't give many skillups if any. So your inference is correct - mining is probably the most challenging gathering tradeskill to gain skillups.

Once again, thank you for that precision.

I agree that mining is very hard to level up, as compared to skinning at least (which is the only other one I have tried). But mining is required to be an engineer... and that is fun, which is all that counts ;)

No, there are skill levels where all of the smelting is gray and the only way to skill up is to go out and mine.

My mining has advanced pretty much at the same rate as my leveling simply because I have to level to be able to reach the mines in the higher level areas. I was able to mine tin well before I could survive easily in the Barrens. I was able to mine iron well before I saw my first iron vein in Stonetalon. The exception for me was mithril and truesilver since those can be found in the same areas I first encountered iron and it took me a while to find enough iron that I could reach to get my skill level up. Now I have the ability to mine thorium but I have yet to see a thorium vein.

Mining isn't that hard to level. But you do have to spend time on it.

I grinded kobolds near Hammerfall Base in Arathi Highlands. There is a kobold cave that had truesilver nodes, mithril and other mid-level nodes. The respawns were decent but I pretty much stayed in that place for hours.

The upside was I got to level my mining and make decent gold. The downside was you were stuck in that place for hours at a time.

Your best bet is to look for caves in contested areas. There are usually several nodes in a cave.
