I have found the Badlands (all over) and the Alterac Mountains (Yeti cave on the way and near the ogres once you are there) are good sources of iron/gold nodes. However, there are 3~4 nodes that appear in Duskwood (near the Worgen) that might be better at level 33. Unfortunately, many players know of these places and they are frequently farmed out. :(

Forum searches are premium only. I didn't turn anything up with a couple of simple searches. I thought I'd ask for advice. How does that put you out exactly?

Did you mean some other kind of search? Well, that might be helpful advice, except that you didn't actually explain yourself.

Gold being a rare spawn of an iron node is basically a lucky find when you are in an area with iron. I can run through an area for hours and not find a single gold or silver mine and then do the same run in the same area the next day and find 3 of each.

My current favorite zone to mine for iron is Thousand Needles which is entirely doable at level 33. I did one run around the zone last night and ended up with over 30 iron in about an hour and a half. I have mined here and in Stonetalon steadily from about level 28 through my current level of 38. I have also started mining iron in Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale.

My basic advice though would be to find a zone and take the time to run through it enough times to learn where the nodes are and work out a route that takes you close enough to most of the nodes so that they show up on your mini-map. I can run efficiently through both Stonetalon and Thousand Needles and visit most of the heavy node concentrations in just a few hours and pick up enough ore of various types up to truesilver to provide me with blacksmithing mats or ore and stone to put on the AH.
