Prof swap advice for my hunterFollow

#1 Aug 02 2006 at 3:14 PM Rating: Decent
I have a 28 troll hunter with skinning/leatherworking right now. I've been reading a good deal about the leatherworking skill and it's looking like it will be totally useless for me very soon since there isn't a hunter-oriented spec for it. I wanted, therefore, to switch my lw skill to another gathering skill just to net profit. Since I am a hunter, taking up herbalism or mining would require me to track something other than humanoid/beast, and that's a detriment as far as I'm concerned. Thus I'm lead towards enchanting, but as a gathering skill. How does enchanting work to gather? I know that I find items, disenchant them, and sell the mats on AH, but can I actually level the skill by doing that? Do I have to simultaneously invest some money into the skill in order for it to make me any money? Am I likely to make more money selling the essences and such than I would by just hocking the item itself? If anyone has done this, I could use their experiential wisdom.

Thanks.

Skinning leatherworking isnt an ENTIRELY useless profession for a hunter. Have you looked into the dragonscale peices? Black is very nice... Green and Blue are more shaman oriented, but also can be useful.

IF none of those are your boat, then yeah enchanting would be fine - exactly what you said - you find items and disenchant them. BUT, i have found that you can only disenchant up to like level 75/300. Or maybe its REALLY slow going after that point.

If your not going to use your enchanting for ACUTAL enchanting, it doesnt matter what level you get. Because you can disenchant a level 60 item with skill level 1 enchanting.

But if you plan on using enchanting to actually enchant then you gotta think about that level and the expense that comes along with it.

QFT. Black Dragonscale Armor is nice for 55-60 pre-raid hunters. Here is a discussion and comparision:

However, I also agree that there isn't otherwise much for hunters in leatherworking. I have played both a hunter/miner and a hunter/herbalist before. The arrangement is not ideal, but also not that terrible. I usually leave the mining/herbalism radar on and switch to mobs as required.

Enchanting has positives and negatives:

(Pro)
Sometimes enchanting mats sell for more than the original item.
You can disenchant old gear as well as BoP items from instances.
If you are willing to sacrifice a little gold, you can always enchant your gear.
At high levels, you can make money with the right enchants.

(Con)
Enchanting is a difficult and expensive skill to level. (For example, the master enchanting trainer is in Uldaman)
Without a crafting profession, you will not be able to make items to D/E. This is not really an enchanting disadvantage, but will make your life more difficult.

If your enchanting skill is really a disenchanting gathering skill, you don't *need* to level it. I know I've disenchanted level 40+ items with my level 18 enchanter, and I think some of those were when his enchanting was less than 30. (One can gain skill by disenchanting to 30.)

Low level enchants require only very cheap mats, so it wouldn't cost that much to level it a bit more. (My 18 enchanter is sort of an AH alt; I levelled his enchanting to 150 entirely on mats that were in a major price slump - and that was because my mage wanted some minor mana oil.)
