Question about Fishing Rods...Follow

I'm trying to get the +20 fishing rod from the underwater traps off the coast of desolace, but it's pretty heavy horde-wise, and being alliance and pvp, its a bit of a pain to have to run back after being killed every 10 minutes. What a waste of the underwater breathing potions! Is there a better place for alliance guys to farm for the +20 rod, or is this really it?

That's it, and the droprate is absurdly low. Might want to just buy one.

20g is steep though for someone trying to save up for a mount. That's sortof why I'm looking for the thing anyways. Good rods = higher fishing = stonescale eels = money = mount!

you could also compete in that fishing contest in bootybay.

As for the traps there are alot of them, try to just circle the ones farther from shore

Assuming you can equip a staff, I would recommend this item:

At least you won’t burn through underwater breathing potions. And even my level 60 characters find it useful from time to time. Though you will have to spend time farming for the staff. It is, of course, the mob's rare drop.

Realy, you are boned, those traps and i assume the pole(since it was placed in a horde quest objective) were placed there as part of a horde quest. Nobody said that it is for the horde only, but understand that a quest objective will be swimming with horde, and thats how it is, leaving you with 2 choices, buy it(the price is too steep) or farming it late at night(3 am server time usualy worked for me), other than that fishing contests are your only choice.

the 20G will be returned many times over. It's not steep for the advantage you get.

i must disagree. the time it would take to raise your base fishing skill by 20 would not be terribly long. and you would also catch fish which are worth money. so not only would you be losing 20g on the rod but losing out on the gold from selling the fish. this could be 5g, 20g, more, who knows? depends what u get and of course your server. for the same reasons it is nonsense for you to grind for the rod also. in fact grinding for it makes a lot less sense than if you had paid 20g for it. this is because you could have been catching fish that whole time which would have raised you far more than 20 lvls in fishing, and you would have made a ton of money off the fish you got. in fact it would almost never make sense to get this rod because the only time it would be useful is when you have 300 fishing. and the chances are rather good that you could complete the quest for nat pagle's rod at that point which gives +25. the only time it would make sense is if you have fishing of 300 but you are under lvl 40.

i got a bit lengthy, please forgive.

I completely disagree with this statement.

If you have plans to fish in the high level waters later on you’ll need the +20 the Big Iron Fishing Pole will give you. Even using +100 lures you’ll still need the fishing pole, unless you don’t mind having every other fish escaping off your hook.

The +25 fishing pole you mention if from a horde only quest. Nobody on the alliance side can get that pole. So if someone is playing on the horde side and they are willing to wait until they can kill level 50 turtles to get the quest pole, then they may not need to try for the BIFP. But that doesn’t help anyone playing on the alliance side.

But my biggest objection to your post is in its tone. And I fully admit it’s just a difference in play style. Your post makes it sound like the only joy to be had from WoW is from number crunching. If that’s all there was to the game I would have quit over a year ago. One of the things I enjoy about WoW is setting a goal and trying to attain it. For example, I have one of each color of the non-combat dragon whelp pets. It took me months of killing whelps to get them. In that time I could have easily farmed a hundred times the gold it would have cost me to buy them in the auction house. But I don’t consider it time wasted. The point of this game is to have fun. I had fun killing the whelp with the anticipation that the next one that dropped could hold my precious pet.

The BIFP if a fun item to have. It’s yet another goal. Whether someone farms it themselves, which I always prefer, or farms the money to buy it, the fun of owning the pole makes it worthwhile. And in this particular case there’s an added benefit. The BIFP is a white item. It does not bind when you use it. So if you should ever get a better fishing pole you can pass the BIFP to an alt. Or even sell it if you no longer need it.

It isn't?

OK but i do get a lot of fun from number crunching, but i have to agree that there is a huge chunk of fun after putting 3 hrs in to the dang traps, and finly your pole drops, it is the whole sence of acmploshment thing.

According to you, it would also never make sense to buy lures. Sorry, but you need all the advantage you can get when it comes to catching fish, especially when it comes to getting the ones that provide gold. The main thing is to get beyond the cap, whether it's 225 (below 35) or 300 (35 and above).

Like I said, it’s a play style thing. *smiles*

Other than the basics, such as upgrading to a higher DPS weapon, I more or less ignore the numbers. But that’s one of the things that makes WoW so much fun. If you enjoy number churching its there and you can run with it. If you don’t then there are many other elements of the game to have fun with. The boys and girls at Blizzard are far from perfect, but I have to give them a big thumbs up for managing to please so many people with the same game. We just need to try to keep in mind that our way of playing isn’t the only one.

As a wise old man once said, “Fun is whatever is fun.”
