Have just started to take up fishing to pass the time waiting for groups to get from one place to where i am. And for alchemy, one of my freinds will supply potions if i can get the mats. One of these is the oily blackmouth fish. According to the "STICKY" post for trades, it says that you do not need to go to any particular spot to gain skill in fishing, yet i take it you need a certain skill level to catch oily blackmouths? As have tried fishing in Darkshire and cannot get anything?

Oily Blackmouths are available pretty much anywhere in Darkshire. The Problem with fishing is that it's such a pain to get started levelling. A Skill of 1 in fishing is harder to make into a 2 /10 /25 than a lot of other skills because of the number of attempts and the long channelling time. Plenty of Spawns to the north of Auberdine tho...

Assuming you are a nightelf, you can head back to Darnassus and skill up your fishing. You can also purchase lures from a fisherman to apply to your fishing pole which increases your skill temporarily. You should be on the lookout for swirls (schools) of fish off the coast of Auberdine. They look like whirlpools. Cast your lure in or very near the school. If the lure lands outside, just hit the fishing button to recast.

I disliked fishing terribly untill I figured out that I needed to level it in a noob start zone to make it less painful. Could have purchased a lure to make it easier but meh, I'm a tightwad like that.

I fished the little lake by goldshire for a long time, then went to the loch in Loch Modan up to and past lvl 100.

At the same time, I'd recommend picking up cooking skill and level that off of your fish catches. You can find where to get low level cooking recipes by using tradeskills by trade from this site. One thing it took me a while to understand is that some vendors sell fint and simple wood so you can make a cook fire when in the field. I'm not sure if fish stacks changed on the patch, but prior to patch some raw fish seemed to have a limit of 10 per stack and cooked were 20. That's a big space saver that allowed me to stay afield longer skilling up both cooking/fishing with minimal trips back to sell stuff. Leveling cooking also keeps you less dependant on your buddy supplying pots as well as alot offer health regen and stat bonuses etc.

Also, if you're in Darkshire maybe you're Alliance. There's a quest in the Elf city Auberdine at the shore for a +skill fishing pole as well.

I hated fishing at first but, came to enjoy the time venturing out to see what I could catch. Trunks and bloated fish are a bonus, I made a great deal of gold just fishing and found a majority of my mats for smithing in trunks. If you are a night elf, start fishing at the rutheran village and then head to darkshore and do the fishing quest there, fish mainly the circles and dont use fishing lures and your lvl up just fine. Best places to fish, I have found are Goldshire/Darkshore 1 to 50; Westfall (beach)/Darkshore north and south / Loch Modan 50-100; Wetlands / Stonetallon Mts. 100-150; Southshore / Agrathi Highlands 150-200; Lake north of Daralan 200-225; Best places I have found for Stonescale Eel's are Port in Tanaris and beach in Hinterlands. I have found that I lvl faster without lures and fish circles mainly. Have fun!

Thank you all for the help, i mainly took up fishing, as i said earlier for a freind who gives me potions for free if i can get the mats for them. I need the oily blackmouth for the speed boosting potion(still have to buy the other bits, since i am a blacksmith/miner). I hate having to run all over, and these help a lot. It also helps her lvl up her alchemy. The problem i had was i kep trying to lvl up in the wrong places, took the advice given here and soon started lvling up. Also saves the high price for them in the AH.

Stormwind Canals and Darnassus Temple of the Moon pools are both safe places for Alliance to start off levelling fishing (1 - 50). No spawns, but they keep you in a rest state whilst you learn, and you're safe from our Hordish friends.
It also looks funny casting a line in a temple.

So we are all on the same page, you can level fishing form 1-300(with a quick trip out for fishing quest) in any city, unlike other tradeskills, you do not have to find more difficult fish to get skillups, I have leveld over 10 fishermen to 225 left formy fishing quest and came back for the last 75 points.

That's definitely the easy way to skill up, but I would personally prefer to move along to higher level fishing areas to at least catch fish I can do something with (feed to pet, cook, use in alchemy, sell, etc).

once you get your fishing stats up enough (use lures alot to start out) I'd go to Menthil Harbor in the Wetlands. Fishing there gets me a ton of those kind of fish, and you never have to worry about enemy agro

Fishing is a cash cow. I made so much gold from good advise within this site. Wetlands - definately for Oilys and Firefin snappers. Eventually head to Feralas the eels there are worth their wait in Gold. Do buy the lures, as it is worth it in time and well energy. You will need a book from Booty Bay to level from 150 I think - someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Not sure if anyone can tell me how I can now level past 200 in fishing, is their another book?

You are absolutely correct.

Actually, you need to get to 225 skill and also be at least level 35. WHen you have met both of those requirements, you need to locate Nat Pagle, a fisherman standing on an island offshore in Dustwallow marsh (Map). He will give you a quest that will end up in taking your fishing beyond 225.
