You will make pretty much no money off of it but you can make lots of cool gadgets and it really helps for pvp.

Very good low-level headwear.
Underwater breathing.
Crafted guns, scopes and ammunition.
A mind control cap (humanoids) and trinket (mechanicals).
Parachute for safe fall.
Stealth detection goggles.
Fire resist items.
Shadow, frost and fire reflection trinkets.
Mining skill item.
A damage shield belt.
A second hearthstone (teleport trinket, either to Winterspring or Tanaris).
Bombs, grenades, mortars etc for extra damage, stuns and mana draining.
Extra pets (both combat and non-combat).
Polymorph trinket.
Health/mana restore trinket.

Most of these are unique to engineers, either by being Bind on Pickup or by requiring engineering skill to equip.

The old 'you can't make money from engineering' is no longer accurate. A number of new quests have been added to the game and they require items such as Delicate Arcanite Converter, Thorium Grenade etc. Those items now sell easily and for good money, for example the Delicate Arcanite Converter goes for around 50 gold.

Heck it has NEVER been a low money craft to those willing to work it the game is chokced full of quest that need eng items, I am so kind i have made a list for you, remmeber some of the low level stuff is either alliance or horde only, they both get one.

Bronze Tube,The Touch of Zanzil and Look To The Stars . Both are Alliance quest

Deadly Blunderbuss, used in Horde quest Warsong supplies

Gyrochronatom is the objective of "Gyro... What?" badlands quest

Advanced Target Dummy is used in the quest "Gizmo for Warug"

so the kind quest would have to be "That's Asking A Lot" it wants ,Thorium Bar,Hi-Explosive Bomb,Unstable Trigger and it wants them all in healthy amounts

Chasing A-Me 01 , wants a Mithi casing

and EVERY one of those quest have been in the game for over a year, they have bough piles of moutns for me. So the the chump that says there is no money in the trade need to get off the can and start working, you are using a lazy mans excuse. Heck it has even got better , with AQ stuff and now the new AD quest stuff is even more in demand like
The Ironforge Brigade Needs Explosives, wants Dense Blasting Powder(sorry hordies, alliance only)

or Craftsman's Writ - Thorium Tube(AD quest)

There are much much more, jsut do a lil research.

so in addation to what Morthandeus listed it is a source of money!!

Two words:
Discombobulator Ray

Make them for <2 gold.
Sell them for 4-5 gold.

Can easily sell 5-15 a day, more on honor weekends.

Not to mention the great fun you can have with the various Trinkets and Gadgets. And I have never been so loved as when I (as the sole survivor of a whipe) pulled out my trusty (Yeah right) Jumper Cables and ressed the paladin...
